Questions about Colombia vs Mexico for tradespeople.
How could a tradesperson work legally in each country?
Colombia's M Trabajador visa is for foreigners hired by a Colombian company on an employment contract, and covers only that post and employer; a service or project contract can use a V visa. Mexico lets a temporary resident (up to four years) get a permit to work for pay with a job offer. Trade steps are unknown.
What does an employer have to show for a foreign worker?
Colombia's M Trabajador visa asks for a contract summary, a letter explaining why no Colombian is hired, and four months of bank statements showing 100 monthly minimum wages; to be safe, more than COP 180,000,000. Mexico has the Interior Ministry set quotas after a Labour Ministry opinion; employer steps are unknown.
Are trades reserved for nationals, and is a foreign licence recognised?
We found no list of reserved occupations and no source on recognising a foreign trade licence in either country, so both are unknown. For a regulated profession, Colombia asks worker and employer to get a licence from the professional council; which trades are regulated isn't known here. Ask a consulate.
How much English will you find at work?
EF scores Colombia 480 (76th, 2025 edition; Technicians & Maintenance 431) and Mexico 440 (103rd, 2025, 'very low'). The index comes from people who chose to take EF's online test, so it doesn't show how much English is used on building sites or in a given trade or firm.
What do prices, safety and healthcare look like for a worker?
Prices overall are about 0.38 of US prices in Colombia and 0.54 in Mexico (World Bank, 2025). We found no sourced trade pay, so affordability is unknown. The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks them 141st and 139th of 163, and WHO's coverage index is 82 and 79 (2023).
