Questions about France vs Italy for digital nomads.

Who qualifies as a freelancer for a long-stay visa in France and Italy?

France's freelance card needs a main, registered, viable activity that fits your qualifications or experience; a four-year card needs A2 French and a civic exam. Italy's nomad visa is for highly qualified people: a recognised degree, or a higher qualification with five years' experience, plus six months in the field.

What tax and contributions does a freelancer face in France and Italy?

France's micro-entrepreneur regime charges 25.6% of takings for non-regulated services, up to €83,600 a year. Italy's flat-rate scheme is one 15% tax (5% for the first five years of a new activity) up to €85,000, plus INPS 26.07% for those without other pension cover. Whether either fits your visa isn't covered here.

How long can a nomad stay in France and Italy without a visa?

Up to 90 days in any 180 across the whole Schengen area, so days elsewhere in it count. US citizens and New Zealanders get 90 more in mainland France, taken after the first 90. Italy adds none for Australians, and New Zealand's 1961 letters give no length of stay, so plan on 90.
