Questions about France vs Spain for retirees.
Do years on a retirement visa lead to long-term residence in France and Spain?
France: years on the visitor card count towards the five continuous years for the EU long-term resident card, which lasts 10 years and also asks for resources and health cover. Spain: the first card lasts one year and is renewable; law gives long-term residence after five continuous years of temporary residence.
Can retirees work or earn a side income on these visas?
France: the visitor card asks for a handwritten promise not to work. Spain: Washington says the non-lucrative visa allows no work of any kind, including remote work. We found no official page saying whether remote work for a foreign employer counts as work in France, so ask the consulate before relying on any earnings.
What health cover must you arrange before you go to France or Spain?
France: the visa asks for insurance for your stay; public cover (PUMa) opens 3 months after you arrive without work and lasts while you live there 6 months a year. Spain: cover from an insurer authorised in Spain, with no co-payment or limit; travel insurance is not accepted. Neither is on Australia’s reciprocal list.
How do the retirement routes count a spouse or partner?
Spain adds a yearly amount per dependant (more than €7,300 to be safe), and pensions can show regular income. France’s visitor-card page gives no figure for couples; resources can be your own or a family member’s, and child benefits don’t count. Ask the consulate how it counts a household.
