Questions about Greece vs Italy for digital nomads.
What income do Greece's and Italy's digital nomad visas ask for?
Greece asks a set net monthly income; to be safe, show more than €3,600 a month. Italy asks lawful income of at least three times the health-service co-payment exemption level: consulates print about €24,800 to €27,000 a year, so to be safe, more than €28,000. Ask which figure your consulate applies.
Who qualifies as a freelancer for each visa?
Greece accepts contracts with clients outside Greece, or your own business abroad, and you commit not to work for an employer based in Greece. Italy's visa is for highly qualified people: a recognised degree, or a higher professional qualification with five years of experience plus six months in the field.
What if you want to keep moving around?
Greece's visa runs up to 12 months, and an I.8 permit can follow if you apply before it ends. Several Italian consulates ask for a lease registered in your name for the whole visa period, or a deed; the permit lasts one year and renews. Our sources don't say how often you may change address in Italy.
What tax and social security does a freelancer face?
Greek self-employed people pay into e-EFKA in one of six categories: €250.77 to €675.87 a month in 2026 for pension and health together. Italy's flat-rate scheme is one 15% substitute tax, or 5% for the first five years of a new activity, up to €85,000 of takings; INPS contributions are 26.07% for 2026.
When do you become a tax resident in Greece and in Italy?
Greece: with a main home or centre of ties, or over 183 days in any 12 months. Italy: when, for most of the year (183 days), you are registered as resident, domiciled or present. Residence is decided by your facts in each country, so ask an adviser who knows both systems before you plan your days.
