Questions about Greece vs Italy for remote workers.
What does an employee need to show for each visa?
Greece: a declaration that you won't work for a Greek-based employer, plus a contract or proof of employment outside Greece. Italy: a contract or binding offer paying at least the collective-agreement level and not below the ISTAT average (more than €34,000 a year, to be safe), plus an employer declaration.
What income do the two visas ask for?
Greece asks a set net monthly income; to be safe, show more than €3,600 a month. Italy's test is income of at least three times the co-payment exemption level: about €24,800 to €27,000 a year; to be safe, more than €28,000. Remote workers can show it with an employment contract or binding job offer.
Which social security rules follow your foreign employer?
It depends on your passport and employer. Greece: the US agreement does not say how it applies to an employee on a US payroll living there, so that is unknown. Italy: contributions generally follow Italian law for the field of work; Canada has a CPP and OAS agreement with Italy, New Zealand none. Ask your employer.
Will your foreign salary be taxed in Greece or in Italy?
Greek tax residents pay 9% to 44% on worldwide income, with a credit for foreign tax; whether Article 5C's 50% relief covers remote work for a foreign employer is unknown. Italian residents pay 23%, 33% and 43% on worldwide income for 2026; the impatriate regime taxes 50% of qualifying income, if you meet its tests.
Is internet dependable enough for a full-time remote job?
Greece has 44.7 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people and Italy 31.78 (2024, ITU via the World Bank): counts, not speeds or call quality. One Athens advert lists fibre; confirm the speed with the landlord. Test upload speed and call quality at the exact address, at your working hours, before you sign a lease.
