Questions about Mexico vs Portugal for digital nomads.
How does a freelancer prove income for a residence visa in Mexico and Portugal?
Mexico: Las Vegas accepts proof of self-employed income such as a business licence or 1099 forms, with six months of statements; San Diego's checklist describes only an employer's letter. Portugal: a society contract, a services contract or a document attesting services to clients, plus proof of fiscal residence.
What do visitors need to know at the border in Mexico and Portugal?
Mexico: the officer sets your days (up to 180) and may ask about funds and onward travel; paid activity isn't allowed, and no page we read says remote work for foreign clients is. Portugal: 90 days in any 180 across all Schengen countries, and ETIAS will add an online form and fee for visa-exempt travellers.
Can you come and go on a long-stay visa in Mexico and Portugal?
Mexico: the temporary resident visa is valid for one entry, and within 30 calendar days of arriving you go to INM for your residence card. Portugal: a temporary stay visa (under a year) allows multiple entries; a residency visa allows two entries over 4 months, then you apply to AIMA.
Does leaving home end your tax residence there?
Not automatically. Canada looks at your residential ties; New Zealand ends residence only after more than 325 days away; Australia treats you as resident if you go overseas temporarily and set up no permanent home elsewhere. US citizens file wherever they live. Mexico and Portugal may also treat you as resident.
What registration and contributions do freelancers face in Mexico and Portugal?
Portugal: you open activity at the tax office before starting; contributions use 70% of average quarterly income, with a €20 monthly minimum, and VAT exemption applies below €15,000 turnover (2026). Mexico: freelancers have their own registration, invoicing and payment rules, whose details aren't in our research.
