A different level is a difference in the measure, not a verdict on either place. What matters depends on your own circumstances.

Questions about Portugal vs Spain for families.
Which relatives can come with you in Portugal and in Spain?
Portugal lists a spouse, minor children or dependants, adopted minors and dependent first-degree parents; a legal resident's family needs AIMA authorisation, then a visa within 90 days. Spain's telework visa lists a spouse or partner, financially dependent children and relatives in the ascending line under your care.
How much extra money does a family have to show?
Portugal's portal scales means from the minimum wage: 100% for a first adult, 50% for each further adult, 30% for each child. Two adults and two children need more than €2,000 a month to be safe; remote-work visas aren't covered. Spain's telework visa adds about €300 to €900 a month per family member.
What do we know about schools in Portugal and Spain?
Our research doesn't cover schools in either country yet, so they show as unknown, not zero. One detail on the Spanish side: for the non-lucrative visa, Washington advises an enrolment letter from a private school in Spain for children of compulsory school age. We have no equivalent detail for Portugal.
What health cover does each country ask of a family?
In Portugal, a foreign national with legal residence can get an SNS user number and register at a health centre; the number alone does not guarantee the SNS pays. Spain's telework visa asks each accompanying family member for Spanish-authorised insurance with no co-payment or limit, unless public cover is shown.
How do safety and settling in compare for a family?
The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Portugal 7th and Spain 27th of 163 countries. Expat Insider 2026 ranks Portugal 7th and Spain 6th of 31 for ease of settling in. These are national scores and expat surveys, not measures of a city, a school or a neighbourhood.
