A residence visa for remote work is open without a Portuguese job offer (proof of work for employers or clients abroad is enough), with no age minimum. The income test is four times the monthly minimum wage averaged over three months: about €3,700 a month, about €44,200 a year, about US$49,500 at 1.1208 US dollars per euro (ECB, 15 October 2026), under the US$60,000 line. To be safe, have more than €3,700 a month. Holders of temporary residence for at least 5 years can request permanent residence.

Mixed: The Destination Thailand Visa asks for no Thai job offer and has no age minimum, and its funds test is about THB 500,000 in the bank (about US$14,900 at the 9 October 2026 Bank of Thailand rate), well under the US$100,000 line. To be safe, have more than THB 510,000. It is valid for 5 years with multiple entries, but each stay is 180 days, extendable once by 180 days (about 360 days), just under the year the strong grade needs. The year-long Non-Immigrant O-A visa is for people aged 50 and over, and the Long-Term Resident visa asks for about US$80,000 a year in income. To be safe, have more than US$81,000 a year. Questions about Portugal vs Thailand for digital nomads.

What stay rules apply if I keep moving in Portugal and in Thailand?

Portugal: temporary stay covers under a year, multiple entries; a residency visa gives 4 months, then you apply to AIMA; visa-free travel is 90 days in any 180 across Schengen. Thailand: visa-free entry is 30 days; a DTV gives 180 days an entry plus one 180-day extension; past 90 days you report your address.

Does leaving home end my home-country tax residence?

Not automatically. Canada looks at your ties, New Zealand needs 325 days away, US citizens file regardless, and the ATO says you generally stay an Australian resident if you go overseas temporarily without a permanent home elsewhere. Portugal and Thailand then add their own day counts (183 and 180). Ask an adviser.

Can I get a tax number and a bank account before settling?

Portugal: a NIF tax number can be requested before you live there, at a tax office or Citizen Shop or via a legal representative; it is needed for contracts and bank accounts. Thailand: a chamber notice says Bangkok Bank stopped opening accounts for foreigners without a long-term visa in 2025. Ask each bank.
