Questions about Portugal vs Thailand for remote workers.
Which social security rules follow a foreign employer's pay in each country?
Portugal: Canada's agreement (CPP and OAS only) has a coverage certificate, form CPT55; New Zealand lists none; the US agreement differs for employees and the self-employed. Thailand is on none of the four countries' agreement lists, so you may owe contributions in both systems. Ask your employer.
What do the visas cost, and is there a second route for higher earners?
Portugal's national visa fee is €110; Thailand's Destination Thailand Visa costs US$400 at Washington. Thailand also has a Long-Term Resident visa, Work-from-Thailand category: a set yearly income on average (more than US$81,000 to be safe), with employer conditions. Our research doesn't cover a Portuguese equivalent.
What do the visas ask for on health insurance?
Portugal's visas ask for travel insurance covering medical costs and repatriation. Thailand's Destination Thailand Visa lists none, though Canada says hospitals may ask for proof of insurance or a deposit. The WHO coverage index is 83 for Portugal and 82 for Thailand (2023). Cover prices are unknown.
How easy is it to work and settle in English in each country?
EF 2025 scores English proficiency 612 in Portugal (6th of ranked countries) and 402 in Thailand (116th of 123), from people who chose to take an online test. Expat Insider 2026 ranks them 7th and 3rd of 31 for ease of settling in, a survey of expats. Neither shows English at one workplace or in one city.
