Cost of living in Croatia

Prices overall in Croatia were about 0.53 of United States prices in 2025 at market exchange rates (World Bank price level index 53.20, with the United States at 100). That is a whole-economy comparison, not a household budget, and rents differ between Zagreb, the coast and smaller towns. [Cost of living C1] Three adverts we found in Zagreb asked €850 a month for a furnished 45 m² one-bedroom flat in Knez Mislav, €800 for a furnished 43 m² one-bedroom flat in Sveta Klara (with an €800 deposit) and €800 for a 52 m² flat in Knezija, about €15 per m². They are three asking rents, not an average or a quote, and they may be gone. [C2] [C3] [C4]

  • One advert in Varos, Split, asked €850 a month for a 45 m² one-bedroom flat on the fourth floor with no lift; utilities are separate and the tenant pays the agency a commission equal to one month's rent. nekretnine.hr puts the September 2026 average asking rent in Split at €18.61 per m², with the centre the lowest area at €17.33. We found no matching Zagreb average, so the two cities cannot be compared on averages. [C5] [C6]
  • One advert in Zadar's Poluotok, 200 m from the sea, asked €750 a month for a 55 m² one-bedroom flat on the second of four floors with no lift. It states no deposit, fee or utilities, and one advert is not a rent level for Zadar. [C7]
  • The Zagreb Knez Mislav advert says the tenant pays a deposit equal to the first month's rent. The first month's rent of €850 plus that deposit is €1,700; the advert mentions no agency fee or utilities, so treat €1,700 as a floor, not a quote. [C2]
  • ZET, Zagreb's city public transport operator, shows on a price page that carries no date a 90-minute ticket at €1.33 (€1.99 from the driver), a day ticket at €3.98 and a general monthly pass at €47.78 for ZET alone (€53.09 with the HZ railway). Check the current tariff. We found no dated transport prices for Split or Zadar. [C8]
  • At the European Central Bank reference rate of 15 October 2026 (1 euro = 1.1208 US dollars), about €800 to €900 is about $897 to $1000, and the digital nomad income test of about €3,600 a month is about $4,100. To be safe, show more than €3,700 a month. Croatia's average monthly net wage for 2025 was €1,449, across all jobs. [C9] [C10] [C11]
  • We found no dated 2026 price for building costs and heating, internet and phone, groceries, cafes and leisure, health cover or incidentals, so those costs are unknown and no total is given. The nomad stay needs health insurance covering Croatia for the whole stay. Croatia had 29.60 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people in 2024, a measure of coverage, not of speed or price.
