Moving to Portugal from Canada

European hours, Canadian work. More room to choose.

Portugal has two remote-work visas, one for a stay of up to a year and one for longer residence, and both test your income against the Portuguese minimum wage. Canada has both a tax convention and a social security agreement with Portugal, but leaving Canada for a year or more raises its own tax questions.

What we found

The research, in short.

Research information, not advice. Sources last checked 4 October 2026.

Visiting and staying up to a year

We found no official source on how long Canadians can visit Portugal without a visa, so that is unknown here. For a fixed remote-work stay, the route is the temporary stay visa. It allows up to 365 days with multiple entries.

  • Employees show a contract or an employer declaration.
  • Freelancers show service contracts or evidence of services to one or more clients.
  • Both also show the income test and proof of tax residence.

Staying a year or longer

The residence visa for remote work is valid for 120 days with two entries. It includes an AIMA appointment, unless none is available, in which case you apply for the residence permit. The Toronto consulate asks for a rental or loan agreement of at least six months.

  • The income test is average monthly income over the last three months of at least four times the Portuguese minimum wage, which is €920 a month in 2026. Plan for more than €3,700 a month.
  • The consulate also asks for three months of Canadian bank statements. How it converts Canadian dollars is not stated.
  • The minimum wage changes each year, so the 2027 figure needs rechecking.

Documents, fees and timing

Prepare an RCMP federal criminal record issued within three months of your appointment and apostilled. You also need three months of statements from your personal Canadian account, health cover of at least €30,000 including repatriation, and a document attesting your tax residence. The Toronto consulate states 30 days to decide a temporary stay visa and 60 days for a residence visa.

  • The deadlines count from the in-person appointment and fee payment. Booking the appointment comes first.
  • Incomplete applications are not accepted.
  • Freelancers should reconcile invoices with deposits.
More detail

We did not find the visa fee or the cost of the criminal record check, so they are unknown here. Check which Portuguese consulate serves your province before you plan.

Tax

The CRA looks at your residential ties. If you keep a home or other main ties in Canada, you are usually still a factual resident. A treaty with the other country can make you a deemed non-resident instead. You usually become a non-resident on the latest of leaving, your family leaving, or becoming resident abroad.

  • Portugal's residence test includes more than 183 days in a relevant 12-month period, or a home suggesting habitual residence. Residents are generally taxed on worldwide income.
  • If you emigrate, you are treated as having sold most property at fair market value on departure. Canadian real estate, RRSPs, TFSAs and pensions are among the exceptions.
  • Form T1161 applies if your listed property is worth more than $25,000.
  • A Canada–Portugal tax convention is in force, and a social security agreement has applied since 1981.
More detail

The CRA's form CPT55 requests a certificate of continued Canada Pension Plan coverage for employed and self-employed people. Whether it fits your situation needs checking.

If you invoice from Portugal, you open activity with the tax authority, issue electronic receipts and generally report foreign-client income in Portuguese tax and social security.

IFICI's special 20% rate has its own conditions, so no special rate or saving is assumed here. This guide does not cover Portuguese personal tax rates.

Setting up

Provincial health cover depends on your province. Ontario, for example, can keep OHIP for up to two years away for full-time work abroad, or if Ontario stays your primary home, with conditions. Emergency payments abroad are capped. The consulate requires private cover. In Portugal, an SNS user number comes from registering at a health centre and does not by itself settle what you pay.

  • A NIF, the Portuguese tax number, is needed for tax, contracts and bank accounts. It can be issued while you are a non-resident, and you update your address when you become resident.
  • Freelancers then open activity with the tax authority, which notifies social security.
  • Keep statements from your personal Canadian account, because the visa checklist relies on them.
  • If you emigrate, tell Canadian payers and banks that you are no longer resident.

Living in Braga

Braga/Merelim's historical January mean is 8.6°C, with 179.5 mm of rain. October to January are the wettest months. We found no official source for rents or other living costs in Braga, so they are unknown here.

  • In the historic centre, Rua do Souto runs between the castle keep and the archbishop's palace.
  • The São Vicente parish has an events agenda.
  • The São Vítor corridor follows an old Roman road out of the city.

Other places we looked at

The research also looked at Coimbra and Porto, for contrast. In Coimbra the Baixa is being renewed with cafés, shops and coworking. The city describes itself as a 15-minute city, with walkable streets and cycle lanes linking the university, Parque Verde and the historic centre. We found no official source we could use for Porto.

  • We found no official source for rents in either place, so they are unknown here.
