Moving to Singapore from the US

Twelve or more hours ahead of the US. No remote-worker visa; one high-salary pass.

What we found

The research, in short.

Research information, not advice. Sources last checked 15 October 2026.

Permission that fits your plans

Singapore has no general remote-worker visa. Settle the length of your stay, then check whether you can meet the one pass built for people who keep an overseas employer.

More detail

More than S$31,000 a month: MOM's Overseas Networks & Expertise Pass asks for a fixed monthly salary (to be safe, have more than S$31,000 a month, or the equivalent in a foreign currency) for the 12 consecutive months before you apply, earned at an established company: market capitalisation of at least US$500 million or annual revenue of at least US$200 million. To be safe, plan for more than S$31,000 a month. At the European Central Bank's rate of 15 October 2026, that is about $24,200. You can apply from outside Singapore and do not need a Singapore job offer. MOM says most cases take within 4 weeks.

A visit of up to 90 days

US citizens do not need a visa for tourist or business visits of up to 90 days, according to the State Department, and the Singapore embassy in Washington says US passport holders need no visa for business or social visits. Singapore's immigration authority sets the length of your stay at the checkpoint and emails you an electronic visit pass, so the 90 days is not guaranteed.

Submit the free SG Arrival Card within three days before you arrive; your passport must be valid for six months, and you may be asked for cash and proof of onward travel. The authority says visit pass holders may not do any paid or unpaid employment or run a business unless they hold a work pass or do a work pass exempt activity; attending company meetings, conferences and training as a participant is allowed without notifying MOM. MOM says that people who hold a stay pass such as a Dependant's Pass do not need a work pass to work for an overseas employer, but we found no official page that says the same for a visitor, so remote work on a visit pass is unconfirmed: ask MOM before you plan around it. An extension is applied for online when 14 days or fewer remain, ICA decides the length, and a fee of S$40 applies once the stay reaches 90 days.

A year or longer: the ONE Pass

Research the ONE Pass, which lasts up to 5 years, can be renewed, and needs no foreign worker levy or quota. The test is a fixed monthly salary (to be safe, have more than S$31,000 a month) for 12 consecutive months at an established company; MOM says other income sources may be considered case by case, but we found no rule for freelance or contract income, so a freelancer may have no pass designed for them.

More detail

Every other route needs a Singapore employer or business. An Employment Pass is applied for by a Singapore employer and, for new applications before 1 January 2027, needs a salary test of about S$5,600 to S$10,700 a month depending on age (to be safe, have more than S$11,000 if you are 45 or over), plus a points test. From 1 January 2027 the salary test is about S$6,000 to S$11,500 a month depending on age; to be safe, have more than S$12,000 if you are 45 or over. The Personalised Employment Pass needs a higher monthly salary (to be safe, have more than S$23,000), excludes freelancers and needs continuous employment in Singapore. The EntrePass is for a Singapore start-up that has raised funding (to be safe, more than S$110,000) or has accelerator backing. Tech.Pass stops taking applications on 28 January 2027. The Global Investor Programme, which grants permanent residence, starts at a large investment (to be safe, more than S$11 million). MOM says an employer of record cannot sponsor a pass so that you can stay in Singapore while working for an overseas company.

Documents and timing

For the ONE Pass on the basis of overseas employment, MOM lists: a passport page, monthly payslips for the 12 consecutive months before you apply, employment verification from a background screening company, documents for any income other than fixed salary, and your employer's latest financial information from the last three months (market capitalisation or annual revenue from a financial data provider, or audited profit and loss statements from a third-party auditor). Documents signed by the company's own management are not accepted.

MOM says most ONE Pass applications are decided within 4 weeks. The fee is S$105 per pass when you apply and S$225 when the pass is issued, plus S$30 for a Multiple Journey Visa if it applies. If you are approved, you get an in-principle approval letter and then have to make an appointment to have the pass issued in Singapore. Each year, by 31 January, you notify MOM of your professional activities and income for the year before.

Your dates matter, too

Singapore taxes the work you do there, wherever the pay comes from. Look at both tax systems before deciding what you can comfortably spend.

More detail

IRAS says income for services rendered in Singapore is taxable, including for people who work for a foreign employer, even if the pay is not received in Singapore. Overseas income received in Singapore is generally not taxable, but IRAS lists working in Singapore for a foreign employer among the exceptions. A non-resident who works in Singapore for 60 days or less in a calendar year is exempt on those earnings, and every day you are in Singapore counts if you travel in for business. If you freelance, IRAS looks at where the activities that earn the income are based.

Tax: 183 days makes you resident

You are a tax resident for a year if you stayed or worked in Singapore for at least 183 days in the previous calendar year, or for three consecutive years. Residents pay 0% on the first S$20,000 of chargeable income, rising in steps to 22% from S$320,001 to S$500,000, 23% to S$1 million and 24% above; this is the schedule from the 2024 year of assessment.

More detail

A non-resident employee who stays or works 61 to 182 days pays the higher of a flat 15% or the resident rates, and other non-resident income is taxed at 24%.

Tax: Freelancers: where the work is run from

IRAS's guide for online sellers and service providers says income earned through an overseas platform is Singapore-sourced and taxable when the business operations that earn it are based in Singapore, with an example of a seller who finds and coordinates orders from Singapore. That suggests working for overseas clients from a Singapore base does not by itself make the income foreign.

More detail

We found no IRAS page that settles the case of a freelancer on a visit pass, so ask IRAS or an adviser.

Tax: No social security agreement

Singapore is not on the Social Security Administration's list of agreements in force. The Central Provident Fund is for citizens and permanent residents: MOM says that since 2003 foreigners working in Singapore have not been allowed to contribute.

US self-employment tax rules are the same abroad as at home, so net self-employment earnings can still owe it. This is a mechanism, not your bill.

Setting up: A day count for two tax systems

Keep a record of your days in Singapore for each calendar year. IRAS's 60-day exemption and its 61-day and 183-day bands count days of presence, and the US physical presence test counts full days outside the United States over any 12 months.

More detail

Keep it from your first arrival, because the pass type does not change either count.

Setting up: A home that suits your stay

Private homes can only be rented to occupants who stay at least three consecutive months. Public (HDB) flats are not open to visitors: tourists are not allowed as tenants, and non-citizens need a valid pass with at least six months left.

Stamp duty on a lease of four years or less is 0.4% of the total rent. CEA warns that payment is not required to secure a viewing or a rental, and that payments should go to the owner, not the agent.
