Why it is here

Why London is on the list.

A city is listed when there is evidence that people move there. This is the evidence.

  • London had 9,122,909 people at mid-2025 (ONS estimate for the London region), the largest city in the United Kingdom by a wide margin: Birmingham, the largest local authority, has 1,176,960. [N1]
  • At the 2021 census 3,575,740 of the 8,799,726 usual residents of the London region (40.6%) were born outside the United Kingdom, against 17.4% for England as a whole. It counts country of birth, not how long anyone has lived there or why they came. [N2]
  • InterNations, a private expat network, runs a London community that lists 158,898 members, 134 monthly events and 102 interest groups (page read 16 October 2026); members may not all live in the city. It is the largest of the network's communities in the United Kingdom among those read. [E1]

What do I need to rent a home in London as a newcomer?

In England you prove your right to rent with a share code or your immigration documents. A landlord must put your deposit in an approved scheme within 30 days; deposits in the London adverts we found were about five weeks' rent. Whether landlords accept a new arrival with no UK credit history is unconfirmed.
