Moving to Vietnam from Canada

Roughly ten to fifteen hours ahead of Canada. A short-stay visa, and no remote-work route.

What we found

The research, in short.

Research information, not advice. Sources last checked 15 October 2026.

Tax: The Canada–Vietnam agreement

The agreement, signed on 14 November 1997, is in force and appears on Finance Canada's list. For salary, Vietnam may tax pay for work done in Vietnam, but only Canada may if you are in Vietnam no more than 183 days in any 12-month period, your employer is not a resident of Vietnam, and a Vietnamese permanent establishment or fixed base does not bear the pay.

More detail

For independent professional work, fees are taxable only in the country where you are resident unless you have a fixed base regularly available in the other country. Canada deducts tax paid in Vietnam on Vietnam-source income from its own tax on that income. How Vietnam applies the agreement to a visitor working online, and whether its 2026 law changes that, is not stated in the sources read.

Tax: Leaving Canada can trigger a deemed sale

If you cut your ties and become a non-resident, you are treated as having sold most property at fair market value on the day you leave. Canadian real estate, RRSPs, TFSAs and pensions are among the exceptions.

More detail

Form T1161 lists your property if it is worth more than $25,000, and Form T1244 lets you elect to defer the tax. Form NR73 asks the CRA for its opinion on your residency status before you go. If you stay a Canadian resident and own specified foreign property, including funds held outside Canada, costing more than $100,000 at any time in the year, you file Form T1135. This describes the mechanism, not your bill.
