YOUR STARTING POINT
A settled base. A life beyond work.
A furnished home, dependable internet and an everyday routine without a car. This profile defines the questions we investigate.
Person
British, 34, single; no dependants or pets.
Work
UK sole trader: websites, analytics and digital marketing implementation for overseas clients.
Earnings
£60,000 annual profit before personal tax. Monthly profit varies around £3,500–6,500.
Moving funds
£15,000 cash. Protect £5,000; up to £10,000 is available for the move.
Living allowance
£2,000–2,500 monthly, excluding personal tax, social contributions and business costs.
Home
Furnished one bedroom rental. No property purchase.
Timing and calls
March 2027 for about one year; four weeks of UK visits. Three hours of UK overlap, finishing by 21:00 locally.
Spain
Malaysia
Portugal
Braga first for the spending model and daily routine.
Penang remains exploratory until costs and work hours fit.
Valencia if coastal life justifies the housing allowance.
Five relevant years of experience and a bachelor’s degree are assumed, not verified. Gross receipts, contracts, exact dates, UK ties and healthcare needs remain unconfirmed. Profit is not automatically the income evidence accepted for a visa.

Portugal
A closer workday. More room to choose.
PORTUGAL
EUROPE / ATLANTIC COAST
YOUR FIRST PLACE TO INVESTIGATE
Start with Braga if financial breathing room matters more to you than a dry, sunny winter.
Your £2,000–£2,500 monthly living budget and need for UK working overlap make northern Portugal worth a closer look. The current Braga spending model sits below your upper cap, excluding personal tax, social contributions and business costs.
THE TRADEOFF
A wetter winter. The apartment’s heating, insulation and ventilation matter as much as the neighbourhood.
Prepared for Alex, a British independent consultant planning a March 2027 move. Chapter study, researched 23 September 2026. Residence and after tax affordability remain conditional. Map: Natural Earth. Artwork: stylised Braga interpretation.

Permission that fits your plans
Keep your overseas clients. Resolve the length of stay before choosing the route.
CURRENT UK CHECKLIST / 2026
€3,680 / approx. £3,157
Average monthly income over the previous three months. A separate €920 / about £789 available balance is also required. Annual profit alone does not establish eligibility. Recheck the 2027 rules. [V1, V2]
A fixed stay up to one year
If you plan to stay longer
Investigate the residence route. It starts with a 120 day visa allowing two entries, followed by an AIMA permit appointment. Its rental evidence option requires at least 12 months from arrival and tax registration evidence. [V2]
Investigate the temporary remote work route first for your stated year abroad. It permits multiple entries and asks for service evidence, invoices, bank statements and tax residence proof, plus accommodation and insurance for the stay. [V1]
What your documents must establish
TIME THE APPLICATION
Reconcile three months of invoices and receipts. Confirm how the consulate measures sole trader income and converts sterling. Your £60,000 annual profit is useful context, but not the required documentary test. [V1, V2]
Current stated processing: 30 days for temporary stay, 60 for residence. Extensions and appointment waits can add time. The ACRO certificate must be issued within 90 days and apostilled. [V1, V2]
YOUR NEXT DECISION
Is this a fixed year or a potential longer term home? Confirm exact dates and the current checklist before nonrefundable commitments. Neither route is approved for you; visa permission and tax obligations are separate.

Your dates matter, too
Plan the move across both tax systems before deciding what you can comfortably spend.
THE MARCH TO MARCH QUESTION
A year away is not necessarily a full UK tax year abroad.
March 2027 to March 2028 may not meet the following year condition for departure relief through overseas work. Exact dates, UK homes and work during visits need review. Four weeks of visits alone does not settle UK residence. [T3, T4]
Expect a Portuguese tax assessment
Profit is only one input
The residence test includes more than 183 days in a relevant 12 month period, or a home indicating habitual residence. Residence can begin from the first day of the relevant stay. Residents generally fall within income tax on worldwide income. [T1, T2]
Your £60,000 profit must be reconciled with gross invoicing, costs, services and customer types. Accounting and VAT rules need their own assessment. Overseas clients do not by themselves establish an exemption. [T5, T6]
No special rate assumed
Check contributions separately
IFICI eligibility has not been established. The current treaty addresses competing residence claims and double taxation; it does not remove every obligation. No tax saving or special 20% treatment is assumed. [T8, T9]
If Portuguese coverage applies, standard independent worker contributions generally use 21.4% of a monthly base: 70% of the previous quarter’s service receipts, divided by three. Limits and other rules can change this. First check qualifying temporary UK coverage. This is a mechanism, not your bill. [T7, T10]
Before committing: obtain a dated tax reserve and filing plan from a qualified adviser familiar with both countries. The living model excludes personal tax and social contributions.

Build a working base
Confirm access, documents and the home itself. An administrative number is only one step.
Healthcare through the transition
01
For temporary stay, arrange the required full duration cover and confirm entitlement separately. If registered as a resident, follow the health centre process with residence documents, passport and NIF. An SNS number alone does not establish coverage. Confirm who pays and how to access care. GHIC and S1 entitlement must not be assumed. [V1, H1, H2]
Identifiers and your business
02
A NIF identifies you for tax administration; it does not itself decide tax residence. Update registration as required. Confirm activity registration, invoicing and social security arrangements for your services before operating from Portugal. [H3, H4]
Banking and accepted documents
03
Prepare identity, tax number, address and occupation evidence. Check the bank’s exact requirements and fees. Neither a bank nor a landlord is guaranteed to accept your UK documents because another customer’s records were accepted. [H5]
A home that supports your work
04
Check the inventory, heating, ventilation and utilities. Confirm fibre at the exact address and the installation date, then test upload performance, call quality and mobile backup. Walk to essentials and visit during your normal client hours. [H6]
Before a deposit: obtain written tenancy terms, accepted income evidence and the upfront amount. Keep your protected reserve separate.

What gives Braga its character
Braga
Historic streets, everyday walks The pedestrian centre connects the cathedral, gardens and places to eat. For your plans without a car, start with a home close to the routes you would actually use. [1]
SPAIN
A taste of Minho Bacalhau à Braga, frigideiras and traditional sweets give the city a distinct food identity. Explore the restaurant streets, then check evening noise before renting above one. [2]
MAINLAND PORTUGAL
Before choosing a flat
Home condition Check damp, heating and ventilation. Internet Test the connection at the flat.
Culture beyond the postcard gnration brings contemporary music to the centre. Its programme is a useful starting point for evenings out; check the current calendar for something you would choose to attend. [3]
Daily essentials Walk to groceries and transport.
Green space within the city Picoto has paths, picnic areas and a viewpoint. Test the trip from a prospective home: a green break only becomes part of your routine if the journey works for you. [4]
Lease & costs
Confirm deposit, terms and documents.
YOUR MAIN COMPROMISE

Start with these three areas. Then let the actual flat, your working day and the walk to essentials decide.
Where to start looking
ONE ADVERTISED RENT
Historic centre
01
Avenida da Liberdade
São João do Souto
Rua do Souto and Rua de São João are useful starting streets; Mercado São João is a traditional grocery on the latter. [1]
€800 / £686
Your test: Start here for central city life. Return during a UK morning call slot and after dinner to check street and building noise.
PER MONTH
Furnished one bedroom 55 m² gross floor area Fourth floor, with lift Equipped kitchen [4]
São Vicente
02
Around Rua de São Vicente
Use the church as a scouting anchor. The parish has a library and an activities calendar to explore as you build a routine. [2]
ADVERTISED UPFRONT
€1,600 rent + €800 deposit €2,400 / about £2,059
Your test: Compare an actual flat with the centre. Walk its grocery route. For activities that interest you, check the language and whether newcomers can join.
THE IMPORTANT CONDITION
Inner São Vítor
03
The advertiser asks for payslips, a tax return and a guarantor. Confirm whether UK self employment records and your guarantor arrangements are accepted.
Rua de São Victor / D. Pedro V Broaden your search along this corridor. A furnished 60 m² one bedroom on Rua de São Victor was advertised for €850 / about £729 a month. [3] Your test: Compare the flat’s desk space, light and acoustics. If you need a bus, check the service from its actual stop.
Twelve month term and included bills are not stated. Confirm both before treating this as a viable base.
Price is only the first filter. An affordable listing still needs suitable lease terms, acceptable documents and a flat that supports your working day.

OTHER PLACES TO INVESTIGATE
Two different ways to settle
Use these alternatives to test what matters most. The homes shown are individual leads.
01 / COIMBRA
LARGO DO ROMAL / BAIXA
University streets. A riverside routine.
€640 / £549 monthly
Furnished T1, 30 m² gross First floor, no lift Minimum one year [C3]
Start in Baixa and walk towards the Mondego and Parque Verde. Include the uphill route to Alta. Investigate this setting if it matters more than a larger city’s variety. [C1, C2]
Upfront: two months’ deposit plus entry rent: €1,920 / £1,647. Electricity, water and internet are separate.
Your deciding question: can a smaller home comfortably support your working day?
A separate lounge or office is not established. No complete city living budget is available.
02 / PORTO
PRELADA / RAMALDE
More connections. More to explore.
€1,100 / £944 monthly
Furnished T1, 69 m² gross 54 m² usable; minimum 12 months Rua Professor Rocha Pereira 87 [P4]
Explore Bonfim and Miguel Bombarda for libraries, gardens, galleries and cafés. Metro connects the airport. Test each home’s actual route. This rental is in Prelada/Ramalde, not those scouting areas. [P1, P2, P3]
Upfront: one rent plus two deposits: €3,300 / £2,831. Tenant and guarantor income records requested; bills unspecified.
Your deciding question: will the landlord accept your records, and does this address fit your routine?
Acceptance remains unknown. No complete Porto living budget is available.

YOUR MOVING FUND
£15,000 cash − £5,000 protected reserve = £10,000 deployable. The Braga listing’s £2,059 upfront uses about 21% of that fund. Separate advance rent from the refundable deposit, then add documents, cover, travel and temporary stays. Do not count prepaid rent twice.
Where the evidence points
BEFORE COMMITTING
Inspect Braga first. Keep Coimbra in the search if its setting and a workable home outweigh the smaller space in that listing. Give Porto more weight if its cultural and transport options justify the housing cost you secure.
Confirm dates and permission, a tax reserve, an acceptable tenancy, and healthcare and connectivity from arrival.
Constructed allowances, not city averages or quotes. Insurance is a provision, not underwriting. FX: €1 = £0.85780, 22 September 2026, before fees. Totals use unrounded conversion. ECB reference · Braga rental. Budget checked 23 September 2026. Tax and contribution amounts remain uncalculated.

Show your working arrangement
Choose the application route
A consular visa lasts up to one year, or less for a shorter work period. An eligible application while lawfully in Spain can lead to residence authorisation for up to three years. These are distinct routes, not interchangeable promises. [V2]
Document at least three months of commercial relationship and the relevant foreign company’s real activity for at least one year. The framework also asks for suitable qualifications or three years of relevant experience, and terms allowing remote services. [V1,
V2]
If you add Spanish clients
WHAT IS STILL UNCONFIRMED
The professional route permits Spanish company activity up to 20% of total professional activity. This does not permit a local employment contract. Review the proposed client mix before changing your business. [V1]
Your actual evidence, the deciding office’s requirements, social coverage and March 2027 permission. Do not book around an assumed approval.

Review the whole calendar year
A March arrival needs a review of income before and after the move, together with any UK overlap.
RESOLVE SOCIAL COVERAGE FIRST
Investigate qualifying UK coverage.
Spanish government guidance recognises a conditional UK route. UGE instructions differ. Obtain an applicable legislation decision and confirm the evidence accepted for your route; a pending application is insufficient. [S1, V3, S2, S3]
The UK dates still matter
Spain assesses the calendar year
Residence can follow more than 183 days in a calendar year or principal economic interests. Domestic residence generally applies for the whole year. Residents generally report worldwide income, subject to applicable treaty rules. Review 2027 before and after arrival. [T1, T2]
March 2027 to March 2028 need not include an entire UK tax year abroad. Departure treatment through overseas work depends on the following year’s position. Review homes, workdays and exact dates, then treaty rules where relevant. [T3, T4]
No special regime assumed
What the calculation needs
Regional residence, gross receipts, expenses, customer types and the applicable accounting and VAT treatment all matter. Your £60,000 annual profit is a starting fact, not a calculated tax base or a spending balance.
Ordinary independent consulting has not been shown to meet the impatriate regime’s conditions. We have not assumed a special rate or exemption. Immigration permission does not establish special tax treatment. [T5]
Before committing: obtain a dated tax and contribution reserve from a qualified adviser familiar with both countries. Those amounts remain outside the living model.

Put permission before paperwork
An identification number is the beginning. Confirm the rights, registrations and cover that apply to you.
Align the date you start working

Confirm permission and the applicable contribution system, then tax and activity registrations. AEAT’s business census declaration precedes activity. The independent worker process also requires advance registration where applicable. Resolve your route before starting. [H1, H2]

02
Check your recognised right and start date before regional registration. Valencia and Alicante use SIP; prepare municipal address evidence, identification and the INSS entitlement document where applicable. Zaragoza uses Aragón’s separate process. Arrange suitable cover for any gap and immigration requirement. [H3, H4]
Keep documents distinct

OTHER PLACES TO INVESTIGATE
Follow your climate preference
A third city is useful only if it offers a meaningful alternative. These are not equally strong matches.
01 / ALICANTE
CABO DE LAS HUERTAS
A coastal winter. A different routine.
€800 / £686 monthly
Furnished, one bedroom, 50 m² Lift and cooling Minimum 12 months [A3]
Explore Mercado or Benalúa, or a home further along the coast. Historical January averages are 11.7°C and 23 mm of rain; August averages 26.0°C. Summer cooling still matters. The quoted home is in Cabo de las Huertas. [A1, A2]
Rent + stated deposit: €1,600 / £1,372 before extras. The ad assigns insurance and additional property charges to the tenant. That allocation is not legally verified.
Your test: confirm the address, total charges, their legal basis and insurer acceptance.
Exact address withheld. No complete Alicante living budget is established.
02 / ZARAGOZA / LOWER PRIORITY
JUSSEPE MARTÍNEZ 1
An inland option. A colder winter.
€1,000 / £858 monthly
Furnished, one bedroom, 49 m² Lift, cooling and gas heating Minimum 12 months [Z4]
Mercado Central, Parque Grande and the tram offer a city routine to test. The airport station’s January mean is 6.6°C, with a 2.7°C mean daily minimum. This is a material compromise for your winter preference. [Z1, Z2, Z3]
Stated deposit: €1,000. First rent plus that deposit would be €2,000 / £1,716; this is arithmetic, not a complete quoted signing bill.

Continue with Valencia if its outdoor routine is worth the housing allowance you can sustain. Test Alicante if winter climate leads. Keep Zaragoza conditional on changed priorities. None has a confirmed after tax affordability result.
Resolve contribution coverage, tax reserve, permission and tenancy acceptance before treating the move as affordable.
Constructed allowances, not city averages or quotes. Insurance is a provision, not underwriting. FX: €1 = £0.85780, 22 September 2026, before fees. Totals use unrounded conversion. Describe the work you perform
DE Rantau is the route to investigate. Your actual duties determine the category and evidence.
MDEC FAQ V10 / 28 AUGUST 2026
US$24,000 or US$60,000
US$24,000 for technology, including digital marketing and data work; US$60,000 for other professions, including general consultants and marketing managers. Confirm your duties and accepted income measure. [V1]
Build the freelancer evidence
Understand the permission
Client agreements, invoices, payment evidence and bank statements must tell the same story. Contracts must have started at least three months before filing. Your £60,000 annual profit does not replace those records. [V1]
The pass covers 3–12 months, with a renewal option up to 24 months total. It covers Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan. Sponsorship is required; MDEC can sponsor appropriate cases. A tourist stay does not simply convert. [V1]
APPROVAL IS NOT THE LAST STEP
Complete endorsement within six months of approval and one month of entry. Remain in Malaysia until the ePass is issued; leaving earlier can cancel the application.
Place planned UK visits around these requirements rather than assuming approval permits immediate travel. [V1]
MDEC indicates 6–8 weeks after complete submission, with delays possible. A full year, approval and the March 2027 terms are unconfirmed. Never reshape your occupation description to fit a threshold.
[V1] DE Rantau v10 Research checked 23 September 2026. Requirements for March 2027 need reconfirmation. Research information, not an official decision or personal professional advice.

Foreign clients are not an exemption
Separate where income arises, where you are resident and whether treaty relief applies.
WHERE THE WORK HAPPENS MATTERS
An overseas customer or bank account does not settle the source of business income.
Malaysian rules examine the operations producing income and a Malaysian place of business. Assess your actual contracts and working arrangements. [T1]
A year needs more than one test
Keep the UK departure in view
Malaysia has a 182 day residence test plus linked period and prior year tests. Fewer than 182 days in a later calendar year does not by itself prove nonresidence. Date your UK visits and any work performed during them. [T2]
Your March to March plan need not include a complete UK tax year abroad. Review the departure conditions using exact dates, homes and working pattern. A year away is not automatic UK nonresidence. [T3]
Treaty relief is conditional
Source comes before exemption
The UK treaty has specific independent services provisions, including fixed base and physical presence conditions. It does not create a general tax holiday for the first part of your stay. [T4]
An exemption for qualifying foreign income does not establish that your consulting receipts qualify. We have not assumed an exemption, saving or personal tax rate. Get a source, residence and reporting assessment. [T5, T6]
Framework sources include a May 2024 tax compilation and older guidance; later rules need review.
Your next step: obtain a dated filing and relief assessment, then a usable monthly tax reserve. Immigration endorsement and tax registration do not establish an exemption.

Prepare for access, not assumptions
Insurance, available funds and a practical workplace need to work from the beginning of your stay.
Finish the endorsement documents
01
Arrange insurance covering Malaysia throughout the pass period. MDEC’s endorsement checklist also lists the LHDN tax registration slip. Minimum document validity is not permission to buy only three months of cover for a year. Registration alone does not settle liability. [V1]
Know how treatment is paid
02
Foreign patient charges are not complete treatment quotes. Gleneagles Penang can require an admission deposit unless an acceptable insurer guarantee is arranged; uncovered items still require payment. Confirm exclusions, excess, outpatient cover and direct billing. [H1, H2]
Keep money accessible
03
Do not depend on an unapproved local bank account. Ask about your exact pass and records; MDEC warns that many banks may not accept this pass. Maintain a tested way to pay rent and care costs. Understand card and transfer fees. [V1]
Test the apartment as a workplace
04
Confirm cooling, a desk, fixed internet, mobile backup and noise during late afternoon calls. Walk grocery routes, assess crossings and price trips you cannot comfortably walk. Obtain bills, deposits and advance rent in writing. [P8]
No insurer, bank, landlord or treatment provider has assessed your individual case. Keep emergency funds accessible while these arrangements are resolved.

BRING THE DECISION TOGETHER
Build the budget around your routine
Separate observed prices, planning allowances and costs that still need a suitable quote.
CITY RESIDENCE / TANJUNG TOKONG
MYR3,000 / about £551 a month
MONTHLY PLANNING LINES
Groceries and household
MYR550–750 / £101–138
Partly priced basket; remaining items are allowances.
Meals and cafés
MYR650–750 / £119–138
Eight mains, twelve coffees, four snacks; other meals at home.
Electricity allowance
MYR150–250 / £28–46
Illustrative consumption; meter, cooling and bill items vary.
Bus pass + other travel
MYR110 + 200–350 / £20 + 37–64
Pass observation plus an unquoted discretionary reserve.
WHY THERE IS NO COMPLETE TOTAL YET
Confirm work suitable broadband, mobile registration for your pass, insurance, water and building charges, personal spending and tenancy payments. One advertised broadband plan says it should not be used for trade, business or profession: obtain clarification or a permitted alternative. Missing costs are not zero.
Where the evidence points
Keep Penang exploratory. These lines add substance to the rental lead, but do not establish savings against Braga or Valencia. Keep £5,000 protected; deposits and setup must fit your separate £10,000 moving fund. Tax and business costs need their own assessment.

THE DECISION
Choose your compromise.
There is no single winner independent of your priorities. These are conditional research judgements, not numerical fit scores.
01
Portugal · Braga
The compromise Wet winters and property comfort need attention.
Lower constructed living allowance; a routine organised around your work.
Reconsider if: Income evidence, tax reserve or tenancy terms fail your requirements.
02
Spain · Valencia
The compromise Higher housing allowance; plan around the March festival.
Outdoor city life and a different historical winter climate.
Reconsider if: The full budget, social coverage or rental screening proves unsuitable.
03
Malaysia · Penang Island
The compromise UK morning calls take local evenings; total costs remain unpriced.
A different daily setting and an ordinary rental lead.
Reconsider if: Work hours, permission category or tax and costs do not fit.
Where to start
Resolve country requirements first, then investigate Braga. Give Valencia more weight if winter conditions justify the cost. Keep Penang exploratory until the whole budget and daily rhythm work.
Coimbra and Porto offer different Portuguese routines; Alicante and Zaragoza test climate priorities; Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh test daily mobility. Climate sources use different periods and stations, so comparisons are qualitative. See the linked evidence in each country chapter.

YOUR NEXT STEPS
Make each decision in order.
Resolve the questions that could undo the move before making avoidable irreversible commitments.
Confirm your profile and dates
1
Record arrival, return, UK visits, available UK homes and workdays. Decide whether the stay could extend. Separate turnover, profit and three months of actual receipts.
Validate the permission route
2
Confirm the route, application office, year threshold and accepted evidence. Resolve Spain’s social coverage conflict or Malaysia’s occupation category, sponsorship and endorsement sequence.
Get a dated tax and contribution plan
3
Ask an adviser familiar with both countries when residence starts, what income is assessed, which UK obligations remain, and what to reserve monthly. Confirm registrations, relief and filing dates.
Test an actual address and tenancy
4
Check groceries, internet, calls and evenings without a car. Obtain written rent, bills, caps, deposits, advance payments and refund terms. Confirm landlord screening, care access and insurance.
Commit in dependency order
5
Check accommodation evidence requirements before choosing a booking, host or tenancy. Confirm permission, cover, cash access and the payment schedule. Keep a fallback if approval or the property changes.

THE EVIDENCE
Understand the evidence.
Use the linked sources alongside each country section to understand what supports the findings and what still needs confirmation.
Rules, observations and judgement
Official immigration, tax and health sources establish frameworks. Advertisements establish what an advertiser stated. Tourism sources identify places to investigate. Fit assessments connect that evidence to the brief you gave; they are not inspections or promises of access.
Dates matter
Research was checked on 23 September 2026 for a proposed March 2027 move. Refresh thresholds, instructions, charges, events and property availability. Historical climate describes patterns, not future weather; exchange rates illustrate comparison.
Evidence is not equally complete
European budgets are planning allowances. Penang’s ordinary rental budget is incomplete. Spanish social coverage sources conflict. Some property evidence comes from indexed snapshots, not live confirmation. A link does not remove those limits.
Verify consequential claims
Check the source date, nationality, application office and year. Give exact dates, contracts and accounts to qualified advisers. Request written property and insurance terms. Keep each confirmation with the decision it supports.
The boundary of this report
No real customer documents, apartments, bank applications or insurance underwriting have been assessed. This report provides no final eligibility decision or personal tax bill. Artwork interprets places; it is not a verified rental photograph.
Sample report · Review edition · Not for sale
