Questions about Argentina vs Uruguay for fifo workers.

Which stay routes could work for time between rosters?

Argentina: a tourist stay for rest and leisure, up to three months, extendable; the nomad residence fits only remote work for people abroad. Uruguay: Australian passports need no visa, up to 90 days (Smartraveller), renewable for 90 as a visitor. Rostered work isn't addressed in either; ask DNM.

Tourists: stay and extension, Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, argentina.gob.ar; Obtener una residencia transitoria como Nómada Digital, Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (argentina.gob.ar); Uruguay travel advice and advisories (Internet Archive copy), Australian Government, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Smartraveller), Internet Archive copy; Decree 394/009 (regulation to the Migration Law 18,250), articles 8 and 13, as updated, IMPO, the official legislation database of Uruguay; Hoja de identidad provisoria, including the digital nomad variant, Dirección Nacional de Migración (DNM), Ministerio del Interior. How do tax day counts work for an Australian on rotation?

Argentina counts a foreign national as resident after 12 months on temporary authorisations. Uruguay: over 183 days in a calendar year, counting absences of up to 30 days unless a certificate proves residence elsewhere. The ATO says leaving temporarily with no permanent home elsewhere generally keeps you Australian.

Does Medicare cover you in either country?

No: Services Australia says Medicare doesn't cover you overseas, and neither country is on Australia's reciprocal list. Argentina's national hospitals give routine care only against insurance or prepayment. Smartraveller says Uruguay's private care is expensive, often paid upfront, and cover must include evacuation.

Is there a social security or super agreement with Australia?

Uruguay's was signed on 26 August 2025 but is not in force; the Department of Social Services says that could take up to two years. Argentina has none with Australia. Until one applies, which country's contributions cover you, and whether super must continue, is unknown for both.
