Questions about San José.
How big is San José, and how many expats live there?
San José canton had 352,381 residents in the 2022 estimate, the most of any canton in Costa Rica; that counts the canton only, not the wider urban area. InterNations, a private network, lists 19,312 members in its San José community, which counts sign-ups, not residents.
Is San José safe?
Canada's government advises a high degree of caution across Costa Rica and names San José among the provinces most affected by violent crime, mostly tied to gangs and drugs. It lists the Coca-Cola bus terminal area, inner downtown, Mercado Central and public parks as high-risk for theft. No city-only figure is known.
What is the weather like in San José?
At Tobías Bolaños airport in San José, monthly mean daily highs run 28.9 to 31.5 °C (1991 to 2020), and every month from May to October gets 150 mm of rain or more. Only January, November and December combine highs under 30 °C with under 150 mm of rain.
What healthcare is there in San José?
Canada's government says Costa Rica's private clinics and hospitals provide excellent care and are mainly in San José; they can be expensive and usually want payment upfront. A digital nomad stay needs health insurance of at least US$50,000, and residents must enrol with the CCSS. Local prices are unknown.
What does it cost to rent in San José?
We have no rent for San José itself. Elsewhere in the Central Valley, four one-bedroom adverts seen in Heredia on 10 October 2026 asked CRC 210,000 to 400,000 a month, and one Escazú advert asked US$1,300. These are single asking rents, not averages.
