Visa

Work permit in Ecuador

Ecuador's work visa is a two-year temporary residence for foreigners hired by an employer in Ecuador. You need a work contract registered with the labour authority, and an employer with no unpaid tax, social security or company-registry debts. The government fee is US$50 to apply and US$270 when granted.

Who it’s for

  • The work category is for foreigners who want to settle in Ecuador and do lawful work under an employment relationship, in the public or private sector, for an employer in Ecuador.
  • The Law's work category also covers self-employed people and professional, civil or consulting services. The regulation sets separate rules for those, and for foreign staff sent by a parent company abroad on a sponsorship letter, so the employee route on this page is not the only work route. A degree holder can use the professional category, which needs an apostilled or legalised degree registered with the national authority and has the same fees and two-year term.
  • The route is not meant for remote work for an employer abroad. That has its own category in the regulation, and a tourist stay does not allow work of any kind.

Money tests

  • The page asks you to show lawful means of living under Ministerial Agreement 70 of 28 June 2024. For the temporary residence categories the Agreement accepts a registered employment contract paying about US$500 a month, one unified basic salary in 2026. To be safe, have a contract paying more than US$500 a month.
  • The Ministry checks the employer as well as you: it verifies that the employer has enough money to meet its obligations under the contract, and it can call the employer and the worker to an interview.
  • The page asks for no savings balance, deposit or property. To cover an adult child on a dependant visa you must show about US$300 a month more for each one; to be safe, have more than US$300 a month more for each.

Documents

  • Alongside a recent colour photo (JPG, up to 1 MB, 5 x 5 cm, white background) and a passport valid for at least six months, you need a criminal record certificate from your country of origin or any country you lived in during the last five years, translated and apostilled or legalised. It counts as valid for 180 days from issue to your last entry, and a federal certificate counts if it covers national records. Only people aged 18 or over need one.
  • The special documents are the personnel action or the work contract issued by the public body or private employer, and the certificate that the contract is registered with the labour ministry.
  • Your employer must supply a certificate that it has no pending obligations with the tax authority (SRI), the social security institute (IESS) and the company regulator (Superintendencia de Compañías).

Timing

  • There are three ways to file: online through the Ministry's e-VISAS platform, in person at a zonal office in Ecuador, or through the nearest Ecuadorian consulate abroad, where you hand in the documents and pay the fee.
  • Online, you pay the first fee right after submitting the request. That payment covers reviewing the documents and is not refundable, so the category must be chosen correctly. If the request is incomplete you are notified and have 10 working days to fix it, and the Ministry may ask for an interview in person or online.
  • Consular offices abroad are open Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 14:00, and the zonal offices in Ecuador 08:30 to 17:00, with bank payments of the fee accepted until 16:15 in Ecuador. The page gives no processing time, so how long a decision takes is unknown.

Fees

  • The government fee is US$50 when you submit the application and US$270 when the visa is granted, with no VAT. The consular fee schedule lists US$270 for the lucrative temporary categories.
  • People aged 65 or over get a 50% reduction, and people with a disability of 30% or more are exempt. A spouse or child who joins you on a dependant (amparo) visa pays US$50 to apply and US$200 when it is granted.

How long it lasts and renewal

  • The work visa is valid for two years. The Law says temporary residence lasts up to two years and can be renewed on multiple occasions.
  • To renew, the regulation asks for a certificate that you are affiliated to the social security system, which shows the date your employer registered you. The page lists no other renewal documents.
  • If you change job or employer in a way that removes the basis of your visa, the regulation gives you 30 days to apply for a new temporary visa for the new activity, so that your continuous residence is not broken.

Path to permanent residence

  • After 21 continuous months of temporary residence you can apply for permanent residence, which has no end date, before the work visa ends. You may not be away from Ecuador for more than 90 days in total across the temporary visa.
  • When you apply, the Ministry checks that you still hold the basis on which the visa was granted, which for this route is the job. The permanent visa costs US$50 to apply and US$225 when granted, and asks for an Ecuadorian criminal record certificate and proof of one basic salary a month over the last three months (about US$500 in 2026; to be safe, show more than US$500 a month).
  • Once you hold permanent residence you may spend no more than 180 days a year abroad in the first two years, and two continuous years away later ends it. The Law allows a request for naturalisation after three years of regular domicile with permanent residence.

Tax

  • Your days decide your Ecuadorian tax residence: 183 days or more in a tax year, or in any 12 months across two tax years unless you prove tax residence elsewhere. Once you are resident, your Ecuadorian salary and any income from abroad are both taxed, and tax paid abroad earns a credit up to the Ecuadorian tax.
  • Income from work done in Ecuador is Ecuadorian-source income, which is how a salary from your Ecuadorian employer is treated. The 2026 income tax table for individuals runs, in US dollars a year, from 0% up to 12,208 through 5% to 15,549 and 10% to 20,188 to 37% above 109,956.

Your passport

If you hold a US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand passport

What differs for each passport, from the same sources. A line that says there is no difference means the sources we read name none.

United States passport

  • US passports are not on the Cancillería's list of nationalities that need a visa, so you can enter as a tourist before applying. The FBI Identity History Summary for the criminal record costs US$18, and the apostille is a separate State Department step.
  • US citizens abroad generally file a US return on worldwide income. For 2026 the foreign earned income exclusion is up to $132,900, the physical presence test needs 330 full days abroad within 12 months, and foreign accounts above $10,000 together go on an FBAR. The US has no social security agreement or income tax treaty with Ecuador.

Canada passport

  • Canada is not on the visa list. The RCMP says a certified criminal record check is done with fingerprints, and Global Affairs Canada issues the apostille (in force in Canada since 11 January 2024) in about 25 business days plus 5 to 10 days of mailing, which matters against the 180-day validity. Canada and Ecuador signed a social security agreement on 24 June 2024 that is not yet in force, and Finance Canada lists an income tax convention (28 June 2001) as in force.

Australia passport

  • Australia is not on the visa list. The Australian Federal Police National Police Certificate costs A$57 online, or A$114 with fingerprints, and the apostille from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade costs A$105 per document. Australia has no social security agreement or income tax treaty with Ecuador, and the Embassy of Ecuador in Canberra lists no separate visa checklist for Australians.

New Zealand passport

  • New Zealand is not on the visa list. A copy of your criminal record from the Ministry of Justice is free, and the Department of Internal Affairs apostille costs NZ$37 a certificate. New Zealand has no social security agreement or income tax treaty with Ecuador; its list of eleven agreements does not include it.
