Tax: Contributions, KiwiSaver, student loans and NZ Super
Self-employed people in Greece pay into e-EFKA in one of six categories chosen for the year, from 250.77 to 675.87 euros a month in 2026 for pension and health together (the first category 185.09 plus 65.68, the sixth 597.06 plus 78.81), plus small extra levies. New Zealand and Greece have a social security agreement, but Work and Income describes it as covering payments (NZ Super, Veteran's Pension, Supported Living Payment and others, and Greek old age, invalidity and survivors benefits) and lets you add residence periods together; it does not say it removes Greek contributions, so how a New Zealand employee or freelancer is treated for contributions is unknown.
More detail
The government KiwiSaver contribution needs you to live mainly in New Zealand; after a year living overseas (not in Australia) you can withdraw most of your savings, but not the government contributions. You are overseas-based for a student loan if you are in New Zealand 31 days or fewer in a 184-day period, and the loan then stops being interest-free from the day after you left. If you get NZ Super you can keep it in Greece under the agreement if you meet its conditions, such as 1 year lived in New Zealand from age 20; the Greece page says to contact International Services at least 4 weeks before you leave and the general page says 6 weeks, so allow the longer. New Zealand has reciprocal health agreements only with Australia and the United Kingdom.
