Visa

Family visa in Greece

Greece's family visa (family reunification, Migration Code articles 83 to 92) lets a non-EU resident bring a spouse and children under 18. The sponsor needs two years' lawful residence, a home, health insurance and stable income at least a minimum-wage worker's net yearly pay; to be safe, more than €13,000 a year.

Official names
Family reunification (οικογενειακή επανένωση), Migration Code (Law 5038/2023), articles 83 to 92; Residence permit for family reunification (O.1) and autonomous permit (O.2); Residence card for family members of a Greek citizen (O.3), article 93

Who it’s for

  • Family reunification is for the family of a non-EU citizen who has lived lawfully in Greece for two years and holds a permit valid for at least two years that can lead to permanent residence. It does not apply to family members of EU citizens, who have their own rules.
  • The family members covered are a spouse aged 18 or over, unmarried common children under 18 (adopted children included), and other unmarried children under 18 of the sponsor or spouse where custody was lawfully given. The definition we read does not list parents or siblings.
  • Family members of a Greek citizen have a separate route and a residence card (O.3): a spouse, a partner under a cohabitation agreement made in Greece or before a Greek consulate, children and grandchildren under 21 or dependent, and dependent parents and grandparents.
  • Families of investor-permit holders use article 95 of the Code instead, which waives the two-year wait.
  • We read the Migration Code in the Government Gazette issue of 1 April 2023 that the Ministry of Migration and Asylum publishes. The Code has been amended since, so confirm current rules with the Directorate of Aliens and Migration of your Decentralised Administration.

Money tests

  • The sponsor's income must be personal, stable, regular and not from social assistance, and not below the yearly net pay of a minimum-wage worker. The Gazette decision works this out as the monthly minimum wage times 14. It rises by 20% for a spouse and by 15% for each child, and the child uplift is not required when both spouses live lawfully in Greece.
  • The monthly minimum wage for employees is €920 gross from 1 April 2026, which is €12,880 gross over 14 months. The net test is lower than that gross figure, and we did not find the net amount. To be safe, show stable income of more than €13,000 a year before the additions.
  • Regularity of the income is shown by the sponsor having met insurance and tax obligations in the year before the application.
  • The sponsor also needs accommodation big enough for the family and full health insurance that can cover the family members.

Sources: Hellenic Republic, Ministry of Migration and Asylum (published in the Government Gazette). Checked 17 October 2026.

Documents

  • The sponsor proves the family tie, and the authority may call the sponsor to an interview and make any other enquiry it needs. The documents are set by a joint ministerial decision that we did not find, so the exact list is unknown.
  • The sponsor files online through the Ministry of Migration and Asylum's services. The family members must attend an interview at the Greek consulate, and not turning up makes the application inadmissible.
  • After entering, each family member applies for a permit before the entry visa ends. A parent or custodian applies for a minor, who receives an individual permit.
  • An older Attica administration page, written under the 2014 law, lists the type D entry visa, an insurance printout or private policy, the sponsor's declaration that the family situation has not changed, and a copy of the sponsor's permit.

Sources: Hellenic Republic. Checked 17 October 2026.

Timing

  • The sponsor applies while the family members are outside Greece. Having stayed in Greece before applying does not stop an application.
  • The service asks the police and the consulate for opinions, which must arrive within three months, or 30 days more in complex cases. It then approves or refuses, and the consulate issues the special entry visas.
  • The whole process should end within nine months of the application, with three more months in exceptional cases.

Fees

  • The permit fee for family reunification is €150 for each adult family member, and minors do not pay. An adult child who reaches 21 and takes an autonomous permit pays €450.
  • The residence card for family members of a Greek citizen (O.3) carries no permit fee. The consular fee for the long-stay family visa is not in the sources we read, so it is unknown.

Sources: Hellenic Republic. Checked 17 October 2026.

How long it lasts and renewal

  • The first family permit ends on the same date as the sponsor's permit, and renewals follow the sponsor's. If the sponsor becomes a long-term resident, family permits are renewed every three years. To renew, the sponsor shows the family tie still exists and that insurance and tax obligations are met.
  • After at most five years, spouses and children who have come of age can take an autonomous three-year permit (O.2), and earlier on the sponsor's death or after a divorce or domestic violence. It gives immediate access to dependent work and study.

Path to permanent residence

  • A family member can reach long-term resident status after five years of lawful, uninterrupted residence on the same conditions as anyone else, including the Greek language and history test.
  • The residence card for family members of a Greek citizen lasts five years. If the continuity conditions are met, it turns on expiry into a ten-year permit (type M.2) in the 2023 text. Temporary absences up to six months a year in total do not break continuity. Confirm the current card with the Directorate of Aliens and Migration.

Tax

  • You are a Greek tax resident if your permanent or main home, habitual abode or centre of vital interests is in Greece, or if you are there for more than 183 days in any 12 months. Residents are taxed on worldwide income.
  • The scale for wages and business income runs from 9% to 44%. The sources we read do not say whether the tax residence of a spouse who does not work follows the sponsor’s, so that is unknown.

Your passport

If you hold a US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand passport

What differs for each passport, from the same sources. A line that says there is no difference means the sources we read name none.

United States passport

  • US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passports can all enter for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, so a spouse of a Greek citizen who is visa-exempt can enter without a visa and apply for the card within three months of entry or of a marriage in Greece. US missions are in Washington, San Francisco, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Tampa, Atlanta and Houston.
  • The Apostille Convention is in force for Greece (since 18 May 1985) and the US (since 15 October 1981), so US marriage and birth certificates can be apostilled.

Canada passport

  • Canadians applying for a long-stay national visa appear in person and are interviewed at the embassy in Ottawa or the consulates general in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. Canada joined the Apostille Convention on 11 January 2024, so Canadian civil documents can now be apostilled.

Australia passport

  • Visa matters for Australians go to the Embassy of Greece in Canberra, whose consular section works by appointment only. Australia has been in the Apostille Convention since 16 March 1995, and the Australia-Greece social security agreement has been in force since 1 October 2008.
