Why it is here
Why Athens is on the list.
A city is listed when there is evidence that people move there. This is the evidence.
- Athens has the largest population of any Greek municipality: 643,452 residents in the 2021 census, against 319,045 for the next, Thessaloniki. The wider Attica region has 3,814,064. [N1]
- A nomad-focused guide run by Marketing Greece names a community group with 7.1K members and more than a dozen coworking spaces in Athens; it gives no headcount of foreign residents. [E1]

Questions about Athens.
How big is Athens?
The Municipality of Athens had 643,452 residents at the 2021 census, the most of any Greek municipality. The wider urban area is much larger: the Central Athens regional unit had 1,002,212 and the Attica region 3,814,064. Thessaloniki is next, with 319,045.
What is the weather like in Athens?
Average daily highs run from 13.5 °C in January to 33.4 °C in August (HNMS, 1991-2020). Fernshore counts 5 comfortable months, with highs of 18 to 30 °C: April, May, September, October and November. June misses by a hair, at 30.3 °C.
How much is rent in Athens?
Two adverts in Pangrati asked €1,150 a month for a 73 m² two-bedroom flat and €1,200 for a 66 m² one-bedroom penthouse. Both come from one agent, and neither states a deposit or fees. Two asking rents are not an average, and rents in other districts are unknown here.
How do you get around Athens, and what does it cost?
OASA lists a €1.20 ticket valid 90 minutes on buses, trams, the metro and the suburban railway, and a 30-day pass for €27 (€45 if it includes the airport). The two-way airport metro ticket is €16. Eleftherios Venizelos is the largest airport in Greece.
Where do I apply for a residence permit if I live in Athens?
The nomad visa starts at a Greek consulate abroad. The two-year permit that can follow is applied for, before the visa ends, at the Aliens and Migration Directorate of the Decentralised Administration where you live. Attica's documents page predates the 2024 income decision, so confirm documents and fees.

The service labels the monthly mean of daily highs 'max'; the service gives no monthly rain totals, so the rain test was checked against the older HNMS city page (period 1955-2010, http://newportal.hnms.gr/emy/en/climatology/climatology_city), where every month with a comfortable high has under 150 mm. Station Ellinikon (HNMS), id 72, 37.89 N, 23.74 E, 46 m. Monthly mean daily highs 13.5 (January) to 33.4 (August); June is 30.3 and July 33.2.
