Why it is here
Why Chania is on the list.
A city is listed when there is evidence that people move there. This is the evidence.
- People from outside the EU living in the municipality of Chania filed 2,735 residence-permit applications in 2024 and 8,208 from 2021 to 2024, the second most in Crete after Heraklion (3,482 in 2024). The Region of Crete's report does not split them by passport or by reason, and many are for work. [M1]
- A nomad-focused guide run by Marketing Greece lists a community group for Chania, 'Digital Nomads Chania – Crete', and five coworking spaces on Crete (Workhub Chania, Kipseli, Office 12, Pom, Comeet); it gives no headcount or date. [E1]

Questions about Chania.
How big is Chania, and where is it?
The Municipality of Chania had 111,375 residents at the 2021 census (108,642 in 2011); the regional unit had 156,706. The Greek tourism organisation places the city at the western end of Crete, with an old Venetian harbour; the White Mountains rise in the wider regional unit.
What is the weather like in Chania?
Average daily highs run from 14.3 °C in January to 31.4 °C in July (HNMS, Souda, 1991-2020). Fernshore counts 6 comfortable months, with highs of 18 to 30 °C: April, May, June, September, October and November. July and August run just above 30 °C.
How many foreigners live in Chania, and is there a remote-work community?
Non-EU residents in the municipality filed 2,735 residence-permit applications in 2024 and 8,208 in 2021-2024, not split by passport or reason. A Marketing Greece guide lists a Chania nomad group and five Crete coworking spaces, with no headcounts or date.
How much does it cost to live in Chania?
Not known: we found no dated rent or price for Chania. Greece overall is about 0.60 of US prices (World Bank, 2025). The Athens and Thessaloniki rent adverts we found are other cities, so do not read them as Crete prices. Ask for current asking rents.
How do you get to Chania?
The Greek tourism organisation lists flights to Chania Airport (Ioannis Daskalogiannis) from Athens, listed at 55 minutes, and from Thessaloniki, 1 hour 15 minutes. Ferry, road and local transport options are not covered here.
