Visiting
Mexico's immigration institute (INM) lets New Zealand passport holders visit without a visa for up to 180 days, with the multiple immigration form (FMM). The immigration officer decides how many days you get. Visitor status does not allow paid activity in Mexico.
- No page we reviewed says remote work for a foreign employer is allowed as a visitor.

Staying a year or longer
For about a year, the route is the temporary resident visa on economic solvency, for stays of more than 180 days and under four years. You apply in person at the Mexican Embassy in Wellington before you travel. The income test is a monthly income of more than MX$80,000 over the last six months. The alternative is an average bank balance of more than MX$1,400,000 over the last twelve months.
- At the European Central Bank reference rate for 2 October 2026, that is about NZ$7,800 a month, or about NZ$140,000 as a balance.
- The Wellington page says the visa is valid for six months and one entry, and that it does not allow work in Mexico unless INM has authorised a work permit. It does not address remote work for a foreign employer or clients, so ask how it treats your work.
- Under the Migration Law, permanent residence can follow four years of temporary residence.
More detail
The embassy publishes lower New Zealand-dollar amounts, but its page was last updated in February 2025, before Mexico's 2026 UMA, and the live page refused automated access, so they may be out of date. For comparison, the San Diego consulate's 2026 list asks for more than US$4,600 a month. Ask the embassy which amount applies when you apply.
The amounts are set in days of the UMA, an index that INEGI updates each February, so the figure changes each year.

Documents, fees and timing
Wellington lists a valid passport and one unretouched passport-size colour photo with a white background, plus evidence for your category. For economic solvency, that is twelve months of bank statements or six months of proof of steady income. You first email all documents as PDFs. If they are in order, the embassy contacts you to book an appointment, and you bring the originals.
- A marriage certificate is needed if you sponsor your partner.
- Appointments and interviews are only in person at the embassy in Wellington. Video calls are not an option, and every applicant must attend.
- Mexico's visa guidelines give consulates up to 10 working days to decide.
More detail
We found no fee or processing time for Wellington, so both are unknown here.
Once in Mexico, you have 30 days to apply to INM for your residence card.

Tax
A year away does not by itself end New Zealand tax residence. You stop being resident only if you are away more than 325 days in a 12-month period and have no permanent place of abode in New Zealand. If your status does change, the change is backdated to the day you left. Mexico treats you as resident if you set up your home there, with no day count, and taxes residents on worldwide income.
- A New Zealand-Mexico tax agreement has been in force since 2007. It may affect how your New Zealand income is taxed and which country has first taxing rights.
- The agreement generally limits withholding to 15% on dividends and 10% on interest and royalties.
- If you become non-resident, Inland Revenue says you can file an IR3 or ask for an assessment, and should tell your New Zealand bank or share registry so the right withholding tax is deducted.
- Mexico is not on New Zealand's list of social security agreements.

KiwiSaver government contributions need you to live mainly in New Zealand. After a year living overseas (not in Australia), most KiwiSaver savings can be withdrawn.
A student loan stops being interest-free once you are overseas-based, generally after around six months away.
If you also have a home in New Zealand, Mexico looks at where your centre of vital interests is, for example where more than half your income comes from. We found no official source for Mexico's personal income tax rates, so they are unknown here.

Setting up
New Zealand's reciprocal health agreements cover only Australia and the UK, so nothing covers you in Mexico by default. New Zealand's travel advice tells people living in Mexico to hold comprehensive insurance that includes medical evacuation by air. Within 30 days of arriving on the visa, you apply to INM for your residence card.
- IMSS, the Mexican Social Security Institute, lists voluntary cover for independent workers. It excludes some pre-existing conditions and does not refund payments.
- Temporary residents get a CURP, the population registry number, when INM issues their foreigner number. With a CURP you can register online for an RFC, the tax number.
- Mexican banks must offer a basic account for the general public with no fees for core services. Each bank sets its own documents.
- Keep your New Zealand bank statements in order, because the solvency test is based on them.
More detail
Whether you must register for an RFC depends on your tax obligations, and whether you qualify for IMSS cover as a foreign resident needs confirming with IMSS.

Living in Mérida
Yucatán's tourism office describes a centre of plazas, markets and 19th-century houses now used as galleries, cafés and restaurants, around a cathedral it calls the first built on the American continent. Paseo de Montejo has 19th-century mansions now used as museums. Mérida is presented as a gateway to beaches, cenotes, haciendas and the Maya sites of Chichén Itzá and Uxmal. We found no official source for rents, bills, bus fares or other living costs, so they are unknown here.
- The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya shows more than 1,000 pieces in four permanent galleries.
- New Zealand's SafeTravel advice lists hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and volcanic activity among the natural hazards in Mexico.
- New Zealand's nearest embassy is in Mexico City.

Other places we looked at
The research also looked at Querétaro and Puebla, for contrast. Querétaro's historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996, according to the state tourism office, with cobbled streets, plazas, museums and theatres. Puebla was founded in 1531 on a Renaissance grid, and its historic centre has been on the World Heritage list since 1987, according to INAH, which notes its tile-covered houses. We found no official source for rents in either city, so they are unknown here.
- SafeTravel says to avoid non-essential travel in some areas of Mexico but does not name Querétaro or Puebla.
