Why it is here
Why Mérida is on the list.
A city is listed when there is evidence that people move there. This is the evidence.
- Mérida is the most populous municipality in Yucatán, with 995,129 residents in the 2020 census. [M1]
- The United States has a consulate in Mérida: the embassy lists it among its consular districts in Mexico. [E1]
- The INM representation office for Yucatán is in Mérida (Calle 31 No. 94, Colonia México), open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 15:00. [I1]
- The 2020 census counts 15,405 people living in Yucatán who were born in another country, 4,452 of them in the United States. This is a state figure and counts birthplace, not nationality. [M1]

Questions about Mérida.
Is Mérida expensive to live in?
Prices across Mexico average about 0.54 of US prices (World Bank, 2025), a national figure. Four one-bedroom adverts seen on 4 October 2026 asked MXN 8,000 to 13,000 a month; some included bills and some did not. Other Mérida living costs are unknown.
Where is the immigration office in Mérida?
A long stay starts with a temporary resident visa from a Mexican consulate abroad; the rules give 30 calendar days from entry to apply for the card. The INM lists its Yucatán office on Calle 31, open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 15:00. The US has a consulate in Mérida. Which office handles your case is unknown.
How hot is Mérida?
Mérida's average daily highs run from 30.2 °C (January and December) to 36.0 °C (SMN normals, 1991–2020), so no month is at or below 30 °C. A private local guide puts April to June afternoons at 38 to 40 °C.
Is Mérida safe?
Canada's advice (updated 14 October 2026) says to exercise a high degree of caution across Mexico; Yucatán is not on its list of states to avoid. Mexico ranks 139th of 163 in the Global Peace Index 2026, a national rank, not Mérida's.
How much is the bus in Mérida?
A 2026 press report puts a regular Va y Ven bus trip at MXN 12, and the airport and Tren Maya station routes at MXN 45. Taxi, car and other transport costs are not covered here, so they are unknown.
