Why it is here
Why Playa del Carmen is on the list.
A city is listed when there is evidence that people move there. This is the evidence.
- The United States has a consular agency in Playa del Carmen (Plaza Progreso, Local 33). [E1]
- The INM has a federal sub-representation office in Playa del Carmen (Av. Constituyentes), open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 15:00. [I1]

Questions about Playa del Carmen.
How big is Playa del Carmen?
The locality of Playa del Carmen had 304,942 residents in the 2020 census, and the municipality of Solidaridad 333,800. It is a resort city on the Caribbean coast, about 68 km from Cancún.
Where is the immigration office in Playa del Carmen?
A long stay starts with a temporary resident visa from a Mexican consulate abroad; the rules give 30 calendar days from entry to apply for the card. The INM lists an office here (Av. Constituyentes), open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 15:00. Which office handles your case is not known here.
How hot is Playa del Carmen?
No 1991–2020 normals are published for Playa del Carmen's own station. Cancún, about 68 km north, has them: highs of 28.7 to 35.1 °C, but it is a different place. Atlantic and Caribbean hurricane season runs from early June to the end of November (Government of Canada).
Is Playa del Carmen safe?
Fernshore has no Playa del Carmen safety measure. Canada's advice (updated 14 October 2026) says to exercise a high degree of caution across Mexico and that violent crime still occurs in popular tourist areas. Quintana Roo is not on its list of states to avoid.
Does Playa del Carmen have a large expat community?
The United States has a consular agency in Playa del Carmen. There is no count of foreign residents for the city here. The 2020 census counts 5,881 US-born people in all of Quintana Roo, a state figure that counts birthplace, not nationality.
