Questions from digital nomads about Italy.
What income does Italy's digital nomad visa ask for?
Lawful income of at least three times the level that exempts someone from health-service co-payments. Consulates print about €24,800 to €27,000 a year (a May 2026 Tunis embassy sheet is at the top). To be safe, show more than €28,000 a year. Ask which figure your consulate applies.
Who qualifies as a freelancer for the digital nomad visa?
It is for highly qualified people: a recognised degree, or a higher professional qualification with five years of experience, plus six months in the field. You also need health insurance for the whole stay (US consulates ask for at least €30,000 of cover) and a registered lease or deed.
Can you keep moving around if the visa needs a lease?
Several consulates ask for a lease registered with the Revenue Agency in your name for the whole visa period (Los Angeles, Melbourne), or a deed. The permit lasts one year and renews while you keep your work, home and insurance. Our sources don't say how often you may change address, so ask your consulate.
Which Italian tax and contributions apply to a freelancer?
The flat-rate scheme (regime forfetario) is one 15% substitute tax, or 5% for the first five years of a new activity, up to €85,000 of takings; work done mainly for current or recent employers is excluded. Self-employed people without other pension cover pay INPS 26.07% for 2026, up to a €122,295 income ceiling.
How long does the digital nomad visa take, and when can you start working?
US consulate pages state no processing time. Ottawa gives up to 120 days for digital nomads, and Sydney and Perth up to 120. After arrival you apply for the permesso di soggiorno at the Questura within 8 working days; the government FAQ says you can start work once that application is filed.
