How does a freelancer show self-employment for the remote-work visa?

Freelancers show a society contract, a services contract or a document attesting services to one or more entities, plus fiscal residence and average income over three months of at least four times the minimum wage (to be safe, more than €3,700 a month). Temporary stay also accepts a written proposal of one.

What rules apply if I want to keep moving around?

A temporary stay visa covers under a year, is valid for the whole stay and allows multiple entries. A residency visa allows two entries over 4 months, then you apply to AIMA. Visa-free travel is 90 days in any 180 across Schengen. The pages we read do not say how a Portuguese visa counts toward other countries' days.

How do I count days for tax if I keep moving?

Portugal counts more than 183 days, in one stretch or not, in any 12-month period that begins or ends in the tax year; a home you keep can also make you resident. Leaving home may not end home residence: Canada looks at ties, New Zealand needs 325 days away, and US citizens file regardless.

What do freelancers pay in social security and VAT in Portugal?

Freelancers open activity at the tax office before starting. Contributions use 70% of average quarterly income, with a €20 monthly minimum and an optional first-year exemption. VAT exemption applies below €15,000 turnover (2026), with conditions. We state no contribution rate: confirm with Segurança Social.

Can I get a Portuguese tax number without living there yet?

Yes: a NIF can be requested at a tax office or Citizen Shop by appointment, or online through a legal representative with a power of attorney. It stays the same as a non-resident or resident, and it is needed for contracts and bank accounts. The leaflet may pre-date rule changes, so confirm the steps.
