Questions from digital nomads about Spain.
How does a freelancer show self-employment for Spain’s telework visa?
Washington asks for a client certificate with the contract length and remote-work terms, proof of at least three months working with companies outside Spain that will continue for a year, and a degree or three years’ experience. Income is about €2,400 to €2,800 a month by consulate; to be safe, more than €2,900.
Can I take Spanish clients, or clients who are individuals?
Freelancers may serve companies in Spain for up to 20% of their professional activity. Washington says the visa does not allow work for individuals, international organisations, government agencies, universities, foundations, NGOs or other non-profits: you must work for or serve companies. Ask your consulate.
What if I keep moving between countries?
The telework visa lasts up to one year, and the permit after it up to three, renewable in two-year periods; both are for living in Spain. You are tax resident for the whole year if you spend more than 183 days there, counting short absences, or have your main interests there. A permit and tax residence are separate.
How does a self-employed person handle Spanish social security for the visa?
Washington asks self-employed applicants for proof of registration, or a request, in the self-employed scheme (RETA); its US coverage certificate is for employees only. Canberra says the requirement may be waived where Spain has a social security agreement with your country. Rules vary by consulate; ask yours.
Can I open a Spanish bank account when I arrive?
Banks that offer payment accounts must offer a basic payment account to people who legally reside in the EU, at a maximum of €3 a month with 120 euro payments a year in the EU. Each bank sets its own papers and a newcomer may lack some, so ask which it needs before you travel.
