Questions from families about Italy.
What do we know about schools in Italy?
Not much nationally: our research doesn't cover schools, so they show as unknown, not zero. Schools' own sites list international options in Turin, Milan, Rome, Florence, Genoa and Naples, several teaching the IB. Places, fees and state schools are unknown.
Can a spouse and children come on the same Italian visa?
Our sources don't say. Elective residence income is asked per applicant (about €31,000 to €32,000 a year; to be safe, more than €33,000 each). The government FAQ's lower nomad income figure (to be safe, more than €25,000) is for a worker without a spouse or children; the family figure is unknown, so ask your consulate.
How would healthcare work for a family living in Italy?
The WHO service coverage index for Italy is 82 of 100 (2023). The nomad visa needs health insurance for the whole stay; US consulates ask for at least €30,000 of cover. A 2024 Bologna notice gives €2,000 a year as the minimum for voluntary enrolment in most categories. Family prices are unknown.
Does moving with children change how you are taxed in Italy?
The impatriate regime taxes 50% of qualifying employment and self-employment income produced in Italy, or 40% if you move with a minor child. You must not have been resident in the three prior years, commit to four years of residence and meet the qualification tests. Ask an Italian adviser if you qualify.
How easy is daily life with children if you don't speak Italian?
English proficiency is moderate: EF 2025 scores Italy 513, 59th of 123. Expat Insider 2026 ranks Italy 14th of 31 for ease of settling in, a survey of expats. The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks it 35th of 163, a country-level measure, not a neighbourhood one.
