Visa, United States passport
50 of 100Mixed
Mixed: a stay of a year or more is open without a Malaysian job offer (DE Rantau Nomad Pass: 3 to 12 months, renewable once for 12 more, 24 at most), the main holder must be over 18, and there is no deposit or investment. The income test is above US$60,000 a year for most roles (above US$24,000 for tech roles), so the about US$60,000 limit for a strong grade is not met for non-tech work. To be safe, have more than US$61,000. US citizens are not on the immigration list of countries that need no visa for any purpose, so a visa with reference may be needed to re-enter for the pass endorsement.

Questions from families about Malaysia.
What do we know about schools in Malaysia?
Our research does not cover schools, so they show as unknown, not zero. MDEC says children of Nomad Pass holders apply for a Student Pass through the school (not needed for home schooling). Examples: ISKL in Kuala Lumpur (IB, AP) and Uplands in Penang (IGCSE, IB Diploma). Fees are unknown.
How safe is Malaysia, and how would healthcare work for a family?
The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Malaysia 12th of 163, a country-level score. The WHO service coverage index is 80 of 100 (2023). Canada says care is mainly in major cities, paid at the time of service. A newspaper reports public hospitals charge non-citizens more. Family cover prices are unknown.
What would a family-sized rent look like in Kuala Lumpur?
Adverts seen on 10 October 2026 asked RM 2,700 for a 732 sq ft two-room flat in Bangsar South, RM 2,980 for 734 sq ft in Jelatek, and from RM 3,500 for two-room units in Brickfields, which adds 8% SST and a two-month deposit. Other family costs are unknown.
How easy is daily life with children if we don't speak Malay?
English proficiency is high: EF 2025 scores Malaysia 581, 24th. Expat Insider 2026 ranks it 13th of 31 for ease of settling in and 17th of 31 for quality of life, a survey of people living abroad. These are national measures, not a view of one school or neighbourhood.
Can a spouse and children come with us?
The Nomad Pass allows a spouse or partner, children under 18 and the holder's parents, at RM 540 each; the spouse cannot work, and each dependant is assessed separately. MM2H allows a spouse, children under 21 and parents, with no participation fee for dependants. Ask both bodies about your family.
