Questions from fifo workers about Costa Rica.
Which stay routes could work for time between swings in Costa Rica?
Visitors need no visa and the officer sets up to 180 days; only a stay under 90 days can be extended. The nomad stay is for people paid from outside Costa Rica: to be safe, more than US$3,100 a month, or US$4,100 with family. It bars paid work there; rostered work abroad is not mentioned.
How do the day counts work for tax in Costa Rica and Australia?
Costa Rica counts you as domiciled after more than 183 days in the tax year; a trip abroad of up to 30 continuous days still counts as days there unless you prove residence elsewhere with a certificate. The ATO says going overseas temporarily with no permanent home elsewhere generally keeps you Australian resident.
Does Medicare cover me in Costa Rica, and what do hospitals expect?
Services Australia says Medicare does not cover you overseas, and Costa Rica is not among the eleven reciprocal agreements. Smartraveller says private clinics are well equipped but very expensive, you will likely pay up front, and you may need evacuation. The nomad stay needs cover of at least US$50,000.
Is home internet reliable enough in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica has 23.29 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people (ITU, 2024), which Fernshore grades as mixed. That counts subscriptions, not speeds or call quality, and city speeds are not measured here. Test upload speed and call quality at the exact address before you sign a lease.
What do prices and safety look like for a base in Costa Rica?
Prices overall are about 0.59 of US prices (World Bank, 2025), an average, not a budget. Heredia one-bedroom adverts asked CRC 210,000 to 400,000 a month on 10 October 2026. The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Costa Rica 62nd of 163, a national score.
