Work and career
50 of 100Mixed

Visa, United States passport
50 of 100Mixed
Mixed: a stay of a year or more is open without a Malaysian job offer (DE Rantau Nomad Pass: 3 to 12 months, renewable once for 12 more, 24 at most), the main holder must be over 18, and there is no deposit or investment. The income test is above US$60,000 a year for most roles (above US$24,000 for tech roles), so the about US$60,000 limit for a strong grade is not met for non-tech work. To be safe, have more than US$61,000. US citizens are not on the immigration list of countries that need no visa for any purpose, so a visa with reference may be needed to re-enter for the pass endorsement.

Questions from fifo workers about Malaysia.
Which stay routes could work for time between swings in Malaysia?
Smartraveller says Australians can usually get a 90-day tourist visa on arrival. The DE Rantau pass is for remote workers paid by firms not registered in Malaysia. MM2H Silver needs a fixed deposit (to be safe, more than US$160,000) and 90 days a year. Rostered work abroad is not mentioned.
How do the day counts work for tax in Malaysia and Australia?
LHDN treats you as Malaysian resident at 182 days or more in a year, and a guideline exempts a resident's foreign income received in Malaysia, with conditions, to 31 December 2026. The ATO says you are generally an Australian resident if you go overseas temporarily and set up no permanent home elsewhere.
Does Medicare cover me in Malaysia, and what do hospitals expect?
Services Australia says Medicare does not cover you overseas, and Malaysia is not on Australia's reciprocal list. Smartraveller says government hospitals need payment up front and most private hospitals want a deposit or proof of insurance. WHO's service index is 80 of 100 (2023). Private cover prices are unknown.
Is home internet reliable enough in Malaysia?
Malaysia has 13.55 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people (ITU, 2024), which Fernshore grades as weak. That counts subscriptions, not speeds or call quality, and city speeds are not measured here. Test upload speed and call quality at the exact address before you sign a lease.
What do prices and safety look like for a base in Malaysia?
Prices overall are about 0.32 of US prices (World Bank, 2025), an average, not a budget. Kuala Lumpur studios and one-bedroom flats were advertised at RM 2,200 to RM 2,980 a month on 10 October 2026. The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Malaysia 12th of 163, a national score.
