Questions from fifo workers about Spain.
How long can a FIFO worker stay in Spain without a visa?
The Schengen rule is 90 days in any 180, counted across all Schengen countries: count back 180 days from each day of your stay. Washington says US passport holders can stay on that basis and Canada’s advice says the same for Canadians. We have not checked an official source for Australian or New Zealand passports.
Which Spanish visas might fit a rostered job abroad?
The telework visa is for remote work for companies outside Spain: about €2,400 to €2,800 a month; to be safe, more than €2,900. The non-lucrative visa allows no work of any kind. Whether a rostered job abroad counts as remote work is not stated, so ask your consulate.
Would a FIFO worker be tax resident in Spain and Australia?
Spain treats you as resident after more than 183 days in a calendar year, or if its base of your activities or economic interests is there. Australia’s main test is whether you reside there; domicile and 183-day tests follow. A treaty in force since 1992 has a tie-break for dual residents. Ask an adviser.
What health cover does a FIFO worker need in Spain?
The telework visa asks for health insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain, with no co-payment or limit; its price is unknown. Victoria’s health department lists Australia’s reciprocal healthcare agreements, and Spain is not among them. The WHO service coverage index for Spain is 84 of 100 (2023).
Is internet in Spain good enough to use between swings?
Spain has 39.2 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people (2024, ITU via the World Bank). That is a national count, not a speed, so quality at a given address is unknown; confirm what a provider can connect there before you sign a lease.
