Questions from fifo workers about Thailand.

Which stay routes could work for time between swings in Thailand?

Visa-free entry is 30 days for tourism, with one discretionary 30-day extension. The Destination Thailand Visa gives 180 days an entry plus one 180-day extension, with a set balance in the last three months (to be safe, more than THB 510,000). The pages name remote workers, not rostered work abroad; ask the embassy.

How do the day counts work for tax in Thailand and Australia?

Thailand treats you as resident at 180 days or more in the tax year, and taxes a resident's foreign income brought in if earned from 1 January 2024. The ATO says you are generally an Australian resident if you go overseas temporarily and set up no permanent home elsewhere. Both can apply; ask an adviser.

Does Medicare cover me in Thailand, and what do hospitals expect?

Services Australia says Medicare does not cover you overseas, and Thailand is not among Australia's eleven reciprocal health agreements. Smartraveller says hospitals may ask for a deposit, your insurance and a valid visa, and medical evacuation can be very expensive. Private cover prices are unknown.

Is home internet reliable enough in Thailand?

Thailand has 14.89 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people (ITU, 2024), which Fernshore grades as weak. That counts subscriptions, not speeds or call quality, and city speeds are not measured here. Test upload speed and call quality at the exact address before you sign a lease.

What do prices and safety look like for a base in Thailand?

Prices overall are about 0.31 of US prices (World Bank, 2025), an average, not a budget. Chiang Mai one-bedroom condo adverts asked THB 10,000 to 18,000 a month on 10 October 2026. The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Thailand 101st of 163, a national score that says little about one neighbourhood.
