    50 of 100Mixed

Mixed: a stay of a year or more is open without a Malaysian job offer (DE Rantau Nomad Pass: 3 to 12 months, renewable once for 12 more, 24 at most), the main holder must be over 18, and there is no deposit or investment. The income test is above US$60,000 a year for most roles (above US$24,000 for tech roles), so the about US$60,000 limit for a strong grade is not met for non-tech work. To be safe, have more than US$61,000. US citizens are not on the immigration list of countries that need no visa for any purpose, so a visa with reference may be needed to re-enter for the pass endorsement.

Questions from remote workers about Malaysia.

What does an employee need to show for the DE Rantau Nomad Pass?

Your employer must be foreign-based, not registered in Malaysia. MDEC asks for a signed remote-work contract at least three months old, three months of payslips and matching bank statements; an employer letter is optional but strongly recommended. To be safe, earn more than US$25,000 a year (tech) or about US$61,000 (other).

What are the fees and the wait for the pass?

MDEC charges RM 1,080 per applicant and RM 540 per dependant, non-refundable, plus RM 360 a year to immigration. Processing takes 6 to 8 weeks, and rejections cannot be appealed since 1 August 2026. If MDEC sponsors you, the bond is RM 2,000 (US, Canada) or RM 1,500 (Australia); New Zealand is not listed, so confirm.

Do I owe Malaysian tax or contributions on a foreign employer's salary?

MDEC's FAQ says remote workers are taxable in Malaysia from 61 days of stay, at rates set by residence status. A newspaper reports EPF became compulsory for foreign employees from October 2025 wages; whether your foreign employer must contribute is unknown here. Ask your employer and an adviser.

Is Malaysia's internet dependable enough for a full-time remote job?

Malaysia has 13.55 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people (ITU, 2024), which Fernshore grades as weak. That counts subscriptions, not speeds or call quality, and city speeds are not measured here. Test upload speed and call quality at the exact address during your working hours before signing a lease.

Can I work remotely on a visit without the pass?

We found no official statement that remote work is allowed on a visit, and MDEC says a tourist pass cannot be converted to the Nomad Pass. Visit lengths differ by passport, and the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is needed before arrival. Ask Malaysian immigration before relying on a visit.
