Questions from remote workers about Mexico.
What does an employee need from their employer for Mexican temporary residence?
San Diego asks for a letter signed by a supervisor, on company letterhead, with your name, position, seniority, monthly salary and explicit agreement with your plans to live in Mexico and work remotely. New York asks remote workers for a letter showing permission to work from abroad. Ask your consulate.
How much pay does an employee need for the income test?
Tax-free income above 680 days of UMA a month for six months (to be safe, more than MXN 80,000). San Diego, Las Vegas and New York print about US$4,200 to US$4,600 (more than US$4,700). Vancouver prints Canadian dollars (more than CA$6,500). Consulates differ.
Do I pay Mexican income tax on pay from a foreign employer?
If you are Mexican tax resident, tax applies to income from anywhere. Employees paid from abroad work out a monthly provisional payment and pay it by the 17th of each month, under a copy of the law last reformed in April 2024. Residence follows your home, not a day count. This isn't your bill.
What should a remote worker check about a home and its internet?
Ask which bills are included: a Colonia Alemán advert (MXN 10,000) includes electricity, water and internet; a Centro one (MXN 8,000) leaves electricity to you. Telmex lists home plans from MX$279 to MX$899 a month where it reaches. Test upload speed and call quality, and ask about air conditioning.
Do my home-country social security and pension rules follow me to Mexico?
It depends on your passport. Canada has a social security agreement with Mexico, in force since 1 May 1996, for CPP and OAS. Mexico isn't on the US, Australian or New Zealand agreement lists. Whether an employer owes contributions in Mexico isn't known here; ask yours.
