Mixed: one of the two tests holds. Fixed broadband is 42.2 per 100 people (2024), over the 30 line. But GOV.UK's work visa page names no digital nomad, remote worker or self-employed route, and the visitor rules allow remote work for an overseas employer only if it is not the primary purpose of the visit (a stay of up to 6 months, with no living in the UK through frequent or successive visits).

Questions from remote workers about United Kingdom.

Can I work remotely for my employer abroad while living in the United Kingdom?

There is no remote-worker residence route. A visitor (up to 6 months) may do activities relating to their employment overseas remotely if that is not the primary purpose of the visit. A visitor cannot work for a UK company or live in the UK through frequent or successive visits. A longer stay needs another visa.

Is internet in the United Kingdom good enough for remote work?

The UK has 42.2 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people (2024, ITU via the World Bank). That is a national count, not a speed. None of the rental adverts we found states an internet contract or speed, so confirm both with the landlord before you sign.

Could remote work make me UK tax resident?

It can. Residence turns on days and ties: 183 or more days in the 6 April to 5 April year meets an automatic UK test, and fewer than 16 days usually does not. Overseas Workday Relief covers only duties performed outside the UK, so it gives little to someone working remotely from the UK.

Tax on foreign income, HM Revenue and Customs (GOV.UK); Finance Act 2013, Schedule 45: Statutory Residence Test, legislation.gov.uk (UK Parliament); Overseas Workday Relief (updated 6 April 2026), HM Revenue and Customs (GOV.UK). Checked 16 October 2026

Can an Australian, Canadian or New Zealand remote worker use the Youth Mobility visa?

Citizens of Australia, Canada and New Zealand aged 18 to 35 can apply to live and work in most jobs for up to 24 months (one more year can be added). It costs £340 plus a surcharge of usually £776 a year, and needs savings (to be safe, more than £2,600). US passports are not on the list.

What does a home base cost, and can I work from the flat?

One-bedroom adverts we found asked £1,600 to £2,395 a month in three parts of London, £1,150 in Manchester and £1,275 in Edinburgh. One London advert bars running a business or profession from the flat, so ask whether the tenancy allows working from home.
