Visa, United States passport
50 of 100Mixed
Mixed: a stay of a year or more is open without a Malaysian job offer (DE Rantau Nomad Pass: 3 to 12 months, renewable once for 12 more, 24 at most), the main holder must be over 18, and there is no deposit or investment. The income test is above US$60,000 a year for most roles (above US$24,000 for tech roles), so the about US$60,000 limit for a strong grade is not met for non-tech work. To be safe, have more than US$61,000. US citizens are not on the immigration list of countries that need no visa for any purpose, so a visa with reference may be needed to re-enter for the pass endorsement.

Questions from retirees about Malaysia.
What does the MM2H retirement route ask for, and what does it allow?
MM2H Silver, Gold and Platinum need fixed deposits; to be safe, hold more than US$160,000, US$510,000 or US$1.1 million. Silver's pass lasts five years and renews for RM 1,500. Buying a home is compulsory, and Silver allows no career work.
Do MM2H participants have to spend a minimum time in Malaysia, and is there an age limit?
The Silver page asks for 90 days a year in Malaysia. The guidelines page says applicants must be 25 or over and states the 90 days for participants below 50, but gives no rule for older ones. Ask the ministry which applies to your age.
How would healthcare work for a retiree in Malaysia?
The WHO service coverage index for Malaysia is 80 of 100 (2023). Canada says good care is mainly in major cities, with payment due at the time of service. A newspaper reports public hospitals charge non-citizens more: RM 120 for a specialist outpatient visit, against RM 1 to RM 5. Private cover prices are unknown.
Is Malaysia affordable and safe for retirees?
Prices overall are about 0.32 of United States prices at market exchange rates (World Bank, 2025), a national average, not a budget. The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Malaysia 12th of 163, a country-level score. Adverts in Kuala Lumpur asked RM 2,200 to RM 2,980 a month for studios and one-bedroom flats.
Is foreign income, such as a pension, taxed in Malaysia?
MM2H says participants get a tax exemption on foreign funds or income, such as their fixed deposit. For residents, an LHDN guideline exempts foreign income brought in, with conditions, for 2022 to 2026; the extension to 2036 rests on a Bloomberg Tax report. Whether a pension counts is not covered.
