Questions from tradespeople about Mexico.
Can a tradesperson work for pay in Mexico?
Mexico's Migration Law lets a temporary resident, who can stay up to four years, get a permit to work for pay subject to a job offer, for the activity in that offer. A visitor can have permission for paid activity with a job offer, up to 180 days. Other visitors cannot be paid there. Employer steps are unknown.
Are trades reserved for Mexicans, and is a foreign trade licence recognised?
We found no list of occupations reserved for Mexicans and no source on recognising a foreign trade licence, so both are unknown. The Migration Law has the Interior Ministry set quotas and requirements for paid-work visas after a favourable opinion from the Labour Ministry. Ask INM or a Mexican consulate.
How much English will I find at work in Mexico?
The EF English Proficiency Index 2025 scores Mexico 440, 103rd, 19 points down on the previous score, in its 'very low' band. The index comes from people who chose to take EF's online test, so it does not show how much English is used on building sites or in a given trade or firm.
What do prices and rents look like, and what do trades pay in Mexico?
Prices overall are about 0.54 of US prices (World Bank, 2025), an average, not a budget. Mérida one-bedroom adverts asked MXN 8,000 to 13,000 a month on 4 October 2026. We found no sourced pay for trades in Mexico, so whether a wage covers these costs is unknown.
How safe is Mexico, and what is healthcare like for a worker?
The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Mexico 139th of 163. Canada advises a high degree of caution because of high criminal activity and kidnapping. WHO's service coverage index is 79 of 100 (2023). Canada says good care is in private hospitals in major cities, limited in rural areas, and often paid in advance.
