Questions from tradespeople about Spain.
Can a non-EU tradesperson get a work permit to work in Spain?
Spain’s Ministry of Inclusion describes a residence-and-work authorisation that your employer requests, for a stay of more than 90 days and under five years. It needs a signed contract and a national employment situation that allows the hire, such as a hard-to-fill occupation. Check current rules with the consulate.
Is a US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand trade qualification recognised in Spain?
We could not confirm it. The work authorisation asks for the qualification the law requires for the profession, homologated where applicable. The education ministry recognises foreign vocational titles as Spanish Technician-level equivalents. Which trades need this is unknown here; ask the consulate.
Is English enough to work in a trade in Spain?
The EF English Proficiency Index 2025 scores Spain 540, 36th of 123. It is built from people who chose to take an online test, so it is a national estimate, not a measure of English on a job site. We found no sourced figure for English in the trades, so that is unknown.
How expensive is Spain compared with the United States?
Prices overall are about 0.65 of US prices (World Bank, 2025), an economy-wide average. Fotocasa’s asking rents run from €10.73 per m² a month in Granada to €23.15 in Barcelona. We have no sourced trade wages for Spain, so how far a wage goes is unknown.
How do safety and healthcare compare in Spain?
The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Spain 27th of 163; it measures peacefulness, not workplace safety, and we found no sourced site-safety figures. The WHO service coverage index is 84 of 100 (2023), a measure of access to services. Public-system access for new employees is not covered here.
