Permission that fits your plans
Keep your remote job or clients. Settle the length of stay before choosing a route.

180 days, renewable once: The digital nomad stay is a transitory residence of up to 180 days for people from countries whose citizens need no tourist visa, which includes US citizens, who provide services remotely to people or companies based abroad (Disposición DNM 758/2022). It can be extended once, for the same length, so the most it gives is 360 days. The disposition sets no income minimum. Instead you show the work: a signed application with your personal details and the independent work you will do, a short CV, a valid passport, a photo, and evidence of the activity (a contract, a company endorsement or proof of a request for work, certifications, or receipts of income or fees) with at least one reference linked to your occupation. The Argentine consulate in Dublin states a cost of EUR 200 for the procedure and the Toronto consulate says to expect a decision in 10 to 15 business days once the file is complete.

A stay of up to six months
US citizens need no visa to enter as tourists. The immigration authority (DNM) describes the tourist stay as up to three months, which can be extended for a similar period; the Houston consulate also says up to three months, and the State Department says up to 90 days for tourism or business.
More detail
The tourist category is for rest and leisure: DNM's 2022 disposition says it does not cover the reasons a remote worker stays, which is why the digital nomad category exists. If you plan to work remotely during the stay, the consulates direct you to the electronic entry process (TIE 24H) instead, and DNM says not to enter the country before it is resolved. The TIE certificate is valid for three months for its first use, and the permitted stay is counted from the day you enter. Since Decree 366/2025, the migration law asks every foreigner seeking admission for a sworn statement of the purpose of the trip and that they hold health insurance, on conditions the regulations set; we could not confirm how border or airline checks apply, so ask your airline.

A year or longer
The nomad stay ends after one extension, at most 360 days in all. To extend it you apply within the 10 days before it ends (DNM adds a 50% surcharge for a late filing within 30 days afterwards) and show income receipts for the period, an Argentine criminal record certificate, a valid passport and at least half the period spent in Argentina.

Beyond that we found no second nomad stay. The temporary residence categories last one year and can be extended. Two are built around money: rentista, for people who live on income from assets they own abroad (financial instruments, property or company shares), and pensionado, for a regular, permanent pension from a government, an international body or a private company. Both ask for at least five times the monthly minimum wage for each applicant. The wage is set month by month through April 2027, so the test is about ARS 2,000,000 to ARS 2,200,000 a month across that schedule. To be safe, have more than ARS 2,200,000 a month (about $1,500 at the Banco Central rate of 14 October 2026). Pay for personal work does not count for the rentista test, so a salary or freelance fees do not qualify. Savings held abroad are accepted only if their lawful origin is shown beyond doubt, and the funds have to be brought into Argentina through banks authorised by the central bank before residence is granted. A third category, migrant worker, needs a pre-contract with an Argentine employer. Rentista and pensionado are filed inside Argentina through DNM's RaDEX platform. These sources do not settle whether any category suits income from abroad beyond the nomad stay, so ask DNM or a migration lawyer before relying on one.

Documents and timing
Digital nomad stay: the application, CV, photo, valid passport and proof of your activity listed above. The disposition says all of this must be legalised and translated into Spanish and counts as a sworn statement; the Toronto consulate asks for the passport to be valid for six months from entry with a blank page, and for the application note, CV and proof of activity in the original language with a Spanish translation.

The Dublin consulate asks for a passport image and a formal photo with a white background taken at the time of uploading. Rentista and pensionado: a valid passport; an Argentine criminal record certificate, which RaDEX issues; a certificate of no convictions or pending criminal proceedings from every country where you lived for more than a year in the last three; proof of address; proof of regular entry; and proof of income, which for a pensionado is a statement from the payer of a regular, permanent pension and for a rentista is proof that income comes from assets. Documents issued abroad need consular legalisation or, where the issuing country is party to the Hague convention, an apostille, and anything in English needs translating into Spanish by a public translator and legalising with the translators' college. All documents must be originals. DNM says a TIE 24H is resolved in 10 business days, and the Toronto consulate says 10 to 15 and recommends filing at least 45 days before you travel; the consulate review starts only once the documents are in and the fee is paid. DNM's fee table, at ARS 1,000 per unit, lists the nomad extension at 40 units (ARS 40,000) and a temporary residence, or its extension, at 100 units (ARS 100,000) for people who are not from the Mercosur bloc; a preferential appointment for a residence filing costs 50 more units. The table lists the electronic entry processing itself at 120 consular units. A consular unit was set at US$1 in 2000 and the foreign ministry may update it; the Dublin consulate states EUR 200 for the whole procedure, but we could not open a United States consulate's own fee page, so the amount you pay is unknown. After you file a rentista or pensionado application in RaDEX, you receive an email with an appointment date; we found no processing time for residence, so it is unknown.

Tax: The US keeps its claim on you
US citizens abroad generally file a US return on worldwide income. The 2026 foreign earned income exclusion is up to $132,900, and the physical presence test needs 330 full days abroad within 12 months.

You cannot take a foreign tax credit for tax on income you exclude. Foreign accounts that together exceed $10,000 at any time in the year must be reported on an FBAR. The IRS list of US income tax treaties does not include Argentina, so there is no treaty tie-breaker if both countries treat you as resident.

Tax: No social security agreement with Argentina
Argentina is not on the Social Security Administration's list of agreements in force. US self-employment tax applies to your net self-employment profit even when that income is excluded from income tax, and US social security generally applies to work abroad for an American employer.

We did not find which Argentine social security contributions apply to a person on a nomad stay or temporary residence who works for clients or an employer abroad, so that cost is unknown. This describes the mechanism, not your bill.

Setting up: A tax number and identity papers
A foreigner living in Argentina without an Argentine DNI can ask ARCA for a CUIT, the tax number, through its digital presentations service by filing form 460 F/PD with a passport, the DNM file number that shows the type of residence, and a photo. ARCA grants it for up to two years or the length of the residence, and you must replace it within 10 working days of receiving a DNI.

Without a tax key you apply in person after booking a web appointment. We did not open an official page on the DNI itself, so its requirements and cost are unknown.

Setting up: Banking, money and US reporting
The central bank told banks in 2023 that they can open deposit accounts for non-residents, who identify themselves with the identity document of their country of residence, apostilled or legalised, and for foreigners still regularising their status without a DNI, subject to anti-money-laundering checks, so expect to explain the source of your funds. A rentista must bring the funds in through banks authorised by the central bank before residence is granted.

Argentina's foreign exchange rules have changed repeatedly and we did not read the current ones, so how easily you can move money is unknown; the official rate used in this pack is the central bank's. An Argentine account counts toward the FBAR $10,000 threshold.
