Visas in Brazil

Brazil's entry table, updated 7 October 2026, puts the United States, Canada and Australia in the group that needs a visit visa, and New Zealand in the group with visa exemption for up to 90 days. The visa requirement for US, Canadian and Australian citizens has applied since 10 April 2025. The Wellington embassy says New Zealand citizens are granted entry at the border for up to 90 days. [V1] [V2] [V8] US, Canadian and Australian citizens can apply online for an e-visa through the VFS Global portal, with no consulate visit. The New York consulate says it allows a stay of up to 90 days a year with multiple entries while valid and takes about 10 business days on average. Its notice gives the fee as US$80.90 (its fees page footnote says US$80.00); Montreal gives US$80.90 in total; Sydney lists A$152 plus a VFS processing fee whose amount we did not find; Vancouver says the e-visa is valid for five years. Confirm the fee and validity on the VFS site before paying. [V2] [V3] [V4] [V5] [V6] [V7]

  • A visit stay of up to 90 days can be extended by the Federal Police by up to 90 days, never above 180 days in a migratory year, and only for nationals of countries that treat Brazilians the same way (Decree 9.199, article 20); whether that applies to your passport was not checked. The Migration Law bars paid activity in Brazil for visit visa holders (article 13, paragraph 1), while Resolution 45 says nomad activities may be done as a visitor under the visit rules for your nationality and the Ministry of Justice's guide says nomads may enter as visitors for up to 90 days. We found no consulate guidance that reconciles the two, so confirm before working remotely on a visitor stay. [V9] [V10] [V11] [V12]
  • The digital nomad visa (temporary visa XIV, Resolution CNIg 45/2021) is for someone who can do their work in Brazil remotely, with information and communication technologies, for a foreign employer. You show a statement that you can work remotely, an employment or service contract or other proof of the link with a foreign employer, and means from a foreign payer of at least US$1,500 a month (to be safe, more than US$1,600 a month) or bank funds of at least US$18,000 (to be safe, hold more than US$19,000). Health insurance valid in Brazil and a criminal record certificate are also required. [V11]
  • Posts differ on the proof. New York asks for an employment contract signed by the foreign employer and says business owners are excluded; Toronto and Amsterdam also accept a service contract or other proof of the link; Sydney asks for six months of bank statements if you use the balance; Wellington asks for a contract that says you may work remotely. Fees are US$290 at New York for US passports, CA$150 at Toronto, A$190 at Sydney and NZ$200 at Wellington. Some of these pages date from 2024 or 2025, so confirm with the post that serves you. • Initial nomad residence is up to one year and can be renewed for the same period; renewal needs a copy of the CRNM card and fresh criminal record certificates (articles 3 and 6). Someone already in Brazil can ask the Ministry of Justice for the residence authorisation (article 4). After entering on a temporary visa you must apply to register with the Federal Police within 90 days (Decree 9.199, article 64); the CRNM costs R$204.77 and the Federal Police page estimates about 30 business days for the last step and up to 180 calendar days overall. A published path from nomad residence to permanent residence was not found. [V11] [V9] [V19]
  • The retiree visa (temporary visa XIV, Normative Resolution CNIg 40/2019) is for a retiree or death-pension beneficiary who shows a monthly transfer to Brazil of at least US$2,000 in foreign currency; to be safe, have more than US$2,100 a month. Other regular income can top up the amount. The text states no minimum age and no deposit. Initial residence is up to two years; the Vienna embassy says the visa itself is valid for up to one year and holders register with the Federal Police within 90 days of first entry. Renewal is set by a separate resolution we could not locate, so whether this residence can become permanent is unknown. New York lists US$290 for US passports. [V20] [V21] [V22] [V4]
  • The family reunification visa (temporary visa XI) lets family members of Brazilians, or of foreigners with a residence permit, live in Brazil. The New York consulate lists a spouse or partner under Brazilian law; a child, stepchild, parent, grandparent or grandchild of a Brazilian or of a resident immigrant (stepchildren under 18, up to 24 if a student, or any age if dependent); a sibling under 18 (or up to 24 if a student, or dependent); and a guardian of a Brazilian. It cannot be granted if the sponsor is in Brazil on a family reunification visa or the marriage was by proxy. US passports pay US$290. The page does not say whether the family of a nomad or retiree visa holder can use it, so ask the consulate. [V23]
