Visa
Retirement visa in Brazil
Brazil's retirement visa (VITEM XIV) is a temporary visa for retirees and death-pension beneficiaries who transfer money to Brazil each month. The test is a monthly transfer of about US$2,000 (to be safe, have more than US$2,100 a month). Initial residence is up to two years.
- Official names
- Visto temporário XIV: aposentado ou beneficiário de pensão por morte (VITEM XIV); Resolução Normativa CNIg nº 40, de 2 de outubro de 2019; Temporary visa and residence authorisation for retirees and pensioners

Who it’s for
- The route is for an immigrant who is a retiree or a death-pension (pensão por morte) beneficiary and can prove a regular monthly transfer to Brazil in foreign currency. Other regular income may be used to top up the amount.
- The resolution's text sets no minimum age and asks for no deposit. It also does not say whether a holder may work for pay in Brazil, so ask the consulate before you plan to.
- You can apply abroad for the temporary visa, or ask the Ministry of Justice and Public Security for the residence authorisation if you are already in Brazil.

Money tests
- The test is a monthly transfer to Brazil, in foreign currency, of about US$2,000. To be safe, have more than US$2,100 a month.
- You show it with proof of retirement and of the ability to transfer that amount, or proof of a death pension of the same size. Other regular income can complement the amount if needed.
- The amount is set in US dollars in a 2019 resolution, so what it is worth in reais moves with the exchange rate. Toronto asks for bank statements from countries other than Canada or Brazil to be legalised or apostilled.

Documents
- At a consulate the resolution lists a valid travel document, an international vaccination certificate when Anvisa requires one, health insurance valid in Brazil, proof of payment of consular fees, the completed visa form, proof of transport into Brazil and a criminal record certificate from your country of origin (or an equivalent at the consulate's discretion).
- New York adds one recent 2 by 2 inch photo, a copy of your birth certificate, a passport with at least one blank visa page and an FBI background check issued within the last 3 months, together with proof of the monthly retirement income or pension.
- If you are already in Brazil, the Ministry asks for the application form, your travel document, proof of filiation, the receipt for the government fee, criminal record certificates from every place you lived in the last five years, a sworn declaration of no criminal record and the retirement or pension proof.

Timing
- The visa itself is valid for up to one year, the initial period of stay is up to two years, and holders register with the Federal Police within 90 days of first entering Brazil.
- Toronto says a visa typically takes 10 business days from the day the consulate physically receives your application. Canberra says about 2 weeks, with no express service. New York requires an in-person request and takes fees by USPS money order.
- After entering, the Federal Police registration for the CRNM card has a last step of about 30 business days and up to 180 calendar days overall on the government's estimate.

Fees
- New York lists US$290 for US passport holders and US$100 for other nationalities on its retirement page. Toronto lists CA$150 (the line is labelled for the nomad visa), Sydney lists A$190 for Australian passport holders and Wellington lists NZ$200.
- If you apply for residence from inside Brazil, the government's processing and evaluation fee is R$168.13, and the CRNM residence card costs R$204.77.

How long it lasts and renewal
- Both the visa and the in-Brazil authorisation start with residence of up to two years. The Ministry can renew it for up to two years on proof that you are still a retiree or pension beneficiary and can still transfer the required amount, with other regular income allowed to complement it.
- The resolution leaves renewal to a separate rule, which is the Ministry's renewal resolution (RN 30/2018): its annex for retirees lists the renewal documents. If you stop meeting the basis, the Federal Police must be told, and residence can be lost when the basis ends.

Path to permanent residence
- The Ministry's renewal resolution lets a retiree ask for a change to an indefinite term. The annex asks for proof that you are still a retiree or pension beneficiary able to transfer about US$2,000 a month (to be safe, have more than US$2,100 a month), other income if needed, and the receipt for the processing fee.
- Ordinary naturalisation needs at least four years of residence in Brazil and Portuguese communication, and a minimum of one year with a Brazilian child or a Brazilian spouse or partner. The sources do not say whether retirement residence years count.

Tax
- A temporary visa holder with no employment relationship in Brazil becomes a Brazilian tax resident the day after completing more than 183 days, consecutive or not, within a 12-month interval from any arrival; a retirement visa is not an employment visa. Until then only Brazilian-source income is taxed.
- The sources we read do not say how Brazil taxes a foreign pension. As a resident you are taxed on income from any location, and foreign income nobody has taxed at source in Brazil is taxed monthly.
- For the 2026 tax year, filed in 2027, the annual bands run from 0% up to R$29,145.60 to 27.5% above R$55,976.16, and an annual reduction brings the tax to zero for taxable income of up to R$60,000, fading out at R$88,200. Law 15.270 also sets a minimum tax for total annual income above R$600,000.

Your passport
If you hold a US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand passport
What differs for each passport, from the same sources. A line that says there is no difference means the sources we read name none.
United States passport
- New York asks for an FBI background check issued within the last 3 months, and the fee for US passports is US$290. US citizens also need a visit visa for short trips since 10 April 2025.
- The US-Brazil social security agreement was signed on 30 June 2015 and has been in force since 1 October 2018. The IRS treaty list does not include Brazil, and US citizens abroad generally file a US return on worldwide income.
Sources: Consulate General of Brazil in New York, US Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service. Checked 17 October 2026.
Canada passport
- Toronto asks Canadians for an RCMP or local police record issued within 3 months, health insurance valid in Brazil for the stay and a declaration that you can perform professional activities remotely, and requires bank statements from third countries to be legalised or apostilled.
- The Canada-Brazil social security agreement, in force since 1 August 2014, covers the Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security. CPP retirement benefits are payable outside Canada, and Old Age Security abroad needs 20 years of residence in Canada after age 18.
Sources: Consulate General of Brazil in Toronto, Government of Canada. Checked 17 October 2026.
Australia passport
- Canberra asks for a Certificate of non-criminal conviction issued by the Australian Federal Police within the past 90 days, plus one for every country lived in during the past five years, and says retiree visas are issued for up to one year with residence of up to two. Sydney lists A$190 as the fee.
- Australia lists a Brazil social security agreement only as under negotiation, so nothing coordinates pensions between the two countries. If you get the Age Pension, the rate after 26 weeks outside Australia depends on your years of Australian residence, and your super generally stays in your fund.
Sources: Embassy of Brazil in Canberra, Consulate General of Brazil in Sydney, Department of Social Services, Services Australia, Australian Taxation Office. Checked 17 October 2026.
New Zealand passport
- New Zealanders need no visit visa for up to 90 days, but the retirement visa is a temporary visa listed by Wellington at about NZ$200. To be safe, have more than NZ$300. Temporary visas for visa-exempt nationals have been issued electronically since 1 September 2026, with no physical documents or passport.
- New Zealand's list of social security agreements does not include Brazil. If you already get NZ Super you cannot keep it overseas unless you apply and meet the criteria, at a rate based on the months you lived in New Zealand between ages 20 and 65, and Work and Income asks you to call at least 6 weeks before you leave.

Questions about Retirement visa in Brazil.
How much pension income does Brazil's retirement visa ask for?
It asks for a monthly transfer to Brazil of about US$2,000 in foreign currency (to be safe, have more than US$2,100 a month), shown with proof of retirement or of a death pension. Other regular income can top up the amount.
How long does Brazil's retirement visa last, and can the residence become indefinite?
Initial residence is up to two years, and the visa itself is valid for up to one year. The Ministry's renewal rules allow renewal for up to two years or a change to an indefinite term, on proof you still meet the pension test.
Is there a minimum age for Brazil's retirement visa?
The resolution states no minimum age and no deposit. It asks for proof that you are a retiree or death-pension beneficiary and can transfer the required amount each month, so ask the consulate how it reads retirement for younger applicants.
Does Brazil's retirement visa let me add other income to reach the pension test?
Yes. Other regular sources of income may be shown to complement the monthly transfer if the pension alone falls short of about US$2,000 (to be safe, have more than US$2,100 a month in total).
What does Brazil's retirement visa cost in government fees?
New York lists US$290 for US passports, Toronto CA$150, Sydney A$190 and Wellington NZ$200. Applying from inside Brazil costs R$168.13 for processing and R$204.77 for the CRNM card.
Can I keep my US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand state pension if I retire to Brazil?
It depends on the country. Canada's CPP is payable abroad and Old Age Security needs 20 years of Canadian residence; the US and Canada have agreements with Brazil. Australia and New Zealand have none, and Age Pension and NZ Super abroad depend on years of residence.
