Digital nomad visa in Cyprus

Cyprus’s digital nomad visa is a temporary residence permit for non-EU and non-EEA nationals who work remotely for an employer or clients outside Cyprus. The income test is about €3,500 a month net; to be safe, have more than €3,600 a month. The first permit lasts one year, and the scheme is capped at 500 permits.

Who it’s for

  • The permit is for non-EU and non-EEA nationals who can do their work from any location using telecommunications technology. You either work for a company registered abroad or are self-employed and offer services to clients located abroad.
  • It does not let you work for a Cypriot employer or client. The Department’s document list has you sign an affirmation that neither you nor your family members will provide work, services or a project to an employer or client established in Cyprus.
  • The scheme is capped at 500 permits (100 when the Council of Ministers approved it on 15 October 2021, raised to 500 on 3 March 2022). The page says the Department is once again accepting applications but does not say how many places are left. Your spouse or partner and underage children can stay for the same period but may not work.

Money tests

  • The income test is a stable net income of about €3,500 a month, after contributions and taxes. To be safe, have more than €3,600 a month. The Department’s list raises the amount by 20% for a spouse or partner and by 15% for each child, and gives no worked example.
  • You show the income with proof of salary payment that states your net income, plus detailed bank statements for the last six months proving a stable and satisfactory income from outside Cyprus. Where there is no proof of net income, the list asks for an affirmation instead.
  • Neither page offers a savings balance or a deposit as an alternative to the monthly income test, and neither sets an age limit.

Documents

  • Employees need an employment contract of indefinite duration or at least as long as the permit, the employer’s confirmation that you can work remotely and that the work does not serve an employer registered in Cyprus, and a stamped copy of the company’s registration certificate abroad. The self-employed need project or service contracts at least as long as the permit and their own confirmation that no client is established in Cyprus.
  • You also need a passport valid at least three months from the day you apply, an original criminal record certificate, original blood test results showing no HIV, syphilis or hepatitis B and C with a chest X-ray for tuberculosis certified by a specialised doctor, health insurance covering inpatient and outpatient care and the transport of remains, and a title deed or rental agreement with a matching utility bill.
  • All documents must be in Greek or English or officially translated. Public documents from a state in the Hague Apostille Convention must carry an apostille, and copies are certified the same way.

Timing

  • You apply after you arrive: within 3 months of arrival, at the Migration Department’s central offices in Nicosia, in person or through an authorised representative. The Department gives the examination time as 5 to 7 weeks, and applications missing a required document are not accepted for consideration.
  • The nomad permit is not on the Department’s list of services that need an appointment; other applications are served without one, first come first served, Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 14:30 (last entry 14:00).

Sources: Migration Department. Checked 16 October 2026.

Fees

  • Issuing or renewing the temporary residence permit costs €70, and registration in the Aliens’ Registry costs another €70 on first registration. The page lists no other government fee and gives no separate fee for family members.

Sources: Migration Department. Checked 16 October 2026.

How long it lasts and renewal

  • The first temporary residence permit is valid for one year. A renewal is issued for a maximum of two years, and the renewal application goes to the Department in Nicosia at least one month before the permit expires.
  • For a renewal you again show a valid passport, the income test, insurance, a title deed or rental agreement with a utility bill, and the no-work affirmation. You give your employment or service contract again; the employer's confirmation and company documents are needed only if your employer changed, and the client confirmation only if your project contract changed.

Path to permanent residence

  • The Department’s nomad page describes no route from this permit to permanent residence or citizenship, and does not say whether years on it count toward long-term resident status. Its document list for that status asks for tax returns and social insurance contribution statements for the last 5 years and a Greek certificate at level A2.

Tax

  • The Migration Department says nomad permit holders who spend more than 183 days in Cyprus in the same tax year are tax residents of Cyprus, provided they are not tax residents of any other country. The Tax Department adds that the day you arrive counts as a day in Cyprus and the day you leave as a day outside.
  • The Tax Department also sets a 60-day alternative: at least 60 days in Cyprus, no more than 183 days in any other country, a business or job in Cyprus (as an employee or office holder) and a permanent home you own or rent. Its return guide adds that you must not be tax resident in another country. The pages we read do not say whether remote work for a foreign employer counts as a job in Cyprus for that test.
  • The Tax Department's return guide says pay from an employer that is not tax resident in Cyprus is not taxed if you worked outside Cyprus as an employee for more than 90 days (and fewer than 183) in the tax year, and that remote work done while you are physically in Cyprus is not reported as work outside the Republic. A separate Tax Department note says a Cyprus tax resident's income from remote work is taxed in Cyprus. Non-domiciled residents are not subject to the special defence contribution on dividends and interest (you are deemed domiciled after 17 of the previous 20 years as a Cyprus tax resident). How the 90-day exemption applies to remote work done from Cyprus is not spelled out.

Your passport

If you hold a US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand passport

What differs for each passport, from the same sources. A line that says there is no difference means the sources we read name none.

United States passport

  • US citizens can visit Cyprus without a visa for up to 90 days, and the nomad permit is applied for in Nicosia after you arrive, so no consulate application comes first. The State Department says Cyprus does not grant a residence permit for work or study to a US citizen who tests positive for HIV; its page does not say whether that covers this permit, and the Department’s list asks for an HIV test result.
  • The list asks for a criminal record certificate from your country of origin or residence but names no US document. The FBI’s Identity History Summary costs US$18, and the apostille is a separate step with the State Department.
  • US citizens abroad file as they would at home, on worldwide income, and the IRS lists a 1984 income tax treaty with Cyprus. The 2026 foreign earned income exclusion limit is $132,900 and its physical presence test needs 330 full days abroad in 12 consecutive months. The US has no social security agreement with Cyprus.

Canada passport

  • Canadians can visit Cyprus without a visa for up to 90 days; Canada’s travel advice asks for a passport valid at least 6 months beyond the day you expect to leave. Canada joined the Apostille Convention on 11 January 2024: Global Affairs Canada issues apostilles for federal documents and eight provinces and territories, while Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan issue their own.
  • The Department’s list names no Canadian police certificate. The RCMP’s certified criminal record check carries a federal fee of 25 Canadian dollars, taking about 3 business days if there is no match and up to 120 business days if manual processing is needed.
  • Canada and Cyprus have a 1984 tax convention with no clause letting either country tax its own citizens living in the other, and a social security agreement in force since 1 May 1991 that covers the CPP and OAS.

Sources: Government of Canada (travel.gc.ca), Global Affairs Canada, Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Checked 17 October 2026.

Australia passport

  • Australians can visit Cyprus without a visa for up to 90 days in a 6-month period, and Smartraveller says anyone staying longer must apply for a visa. The Australian Federal Police issue a National Police Check for use overseas at 57 Australian dollars (114 with fingerprints); the Department’s list does not say whether it accepts that document or whether it wants an apostille, which DFAT issues for 105 Australian dollars.
  • Australia and Cyprus have no income tax treaty. Their social security agreement of 1 January 1993 covers pensions only, and Article 5 puts a person who is gainfully occupied in Cyprus under Cypriot law.

Sources: Smartraveller (Australian Government, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade), Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, Australian Federal Police, Australian Treasury, Department of Social Services (Australian Government). Checked 17 October 2026.

New Zealand passport

  • New Zealand passports are on Cyprus’s list of nationals who do not need a visa for up to 90 days. Cyprus is served by its High Commission in Canberra and an honorary consulate in Christchurch, but the nomad permit is applied for in Nicosia after you arrive.
  • A New Zealand Ministry of Justice criminal record is free and the Ministry aims to respond within 20 working days; an apostille from the Department of Internal Affairs costs NZ$37 and takes 15 working days, or NZ$120 for 5 working days. New Zealand has no tax treaty or social security agreement in force with Cyprus, and its list of working holiday schemes has no Cyprus entry.
