Visa

Family visa in Cyprus

Cyprus’s family routes are for third-country nationals joining a Cypriot citizen, a legally resident non-Cypriot, or an immigration permit holder. Family of Cypriots are examined within four months and may stay without a time limit; family reunification with a resident is examined within nine months.

Official names
Family members of Cypriots (Aliens and Immigration Law, Cap. 105); Family reunification (FR) of certain third-country nationals legally residing in Cyprus; Family members of immigration permit holders

Sources: Migration Department. Checked 17 October 2026.

Who it’s for

  • Cyprus treats these third-country nationals as family members of a Cypriot citizen: a spouse or civil-union partner; a parent of a minor Cypriot citizen who has not lost parental care by court decision; children of the citizen or the citizen’s spouse who are under 21 or dependent; and dependent parents of the citizen or the spouse. A facilitation policy applies.
  • If the marriage ends by divorce, annulment or the Cypriot citizen’s death, you can apply for a permit as another family member if the marriage lasted a long time, you shared a long-term legal or financial commitment and parental responsibilities, and your immigration record is clean. The right is then yours alone.
  • A different route, family reunification, is for relatives of a non-Cypriot third-country national who already lives legally in Cyprus. The sponsor needs at least two years of legal residence, a permit valid for at least one year and a reasonable prospect of permanent residence, with exceptions for staff of approved foreign-personnel companies, intra-corporate transferees and researchers.
  • Under family reunification the covered members are the sponsor’s spouse, if the marriage is at least one year old and the spouse is at least 21, and unmarried children under 18, including adopted children and children in the sole custody of one parent. Parents are not listed.
  • Holders of an immigration permit, such as the Category F or investor permits, can include a spouse and children under 18 as dependants, a separate step handled with that permit.

Money tests

  • Unknown. The Migration Department’s pages for family members of Cypriots and for family reunification state no income, savings or deposit test for the sponsor, and the document lists they link to were not available to us, so any figure is unknown.

Documents

  • Supporting documents must be officially translated and certified, and public documents from a Hague Apostille Convention state need an apostille. You give biometric data (a photo and fingerprints) and a signature; children under 6 give a photo only.
  • To add a family member to an approved immigration permit, the Department asks for form MIP2, a passport copy, the permit holder’s declaration of secured annual income, a certified criminal record certificate for the spouse (from the country of residence if living abroad), a marriage certificate and children’s birth certificates.

Sources: Migration Department. Checked 17 October 2026.

Timing

  • For a family member of a Cypriot, the Cypriot citizen must be present when the application is submitted. You enter with a visa from a Cyprus consulate, or with an entry permit the citizen applies for. The Department examines a complete application within four months.
  • For family reunification, you need an entry permit applied for by the sponsor, and a tourist visa does not serve unless the sponsor works for an approved foreign-personnel company. Applications go only to the Migration Department in Nicosia and are examined within nine months, or 90 days for intra-corporate transferees and researchers.
  • An existing permit allows re-entry on showing it with a valid passport, provided you were not outside Cyprus more than three months.

Fees

  • For a family member of a Cypriot, a residence and work permit costs €80 to issue or renew (including a change of employer), and first registration in the Aliens Register costs €70. A permit for non-paid work or for residence without employment costs €50, plus the same €70.
  • For family reunification, the entry and residence permit, the residence permit and each renewal cost €200 each, plus €70 for first registration in the Aliens Registry. Adding a spouse or child to an immigration permit costs €50 each, plus €70 where the certificate is needed.

Sources: Migration Department. Checked 17 October 2026.

How long it lasts and renewal

  • The length of a family member’s permit depends on their status and each application is judged on its merits; with employment the maximum is five years. Family members of Cypriots may live in Cyprus without a time limit while the conditions are met and the permit is valid.
  • Under family reunification the first permit lasts one year and is renewable, but never beyond the sponsor’s own permit. Family members may stay without a time limit while the legal conditions continue to be met.
  • Spouses, partners and parents of minor Cypriot citizens have free access to the labour market, including self-employment, once they hold a residence and employment permit. Spouses and civil-union partners under family reunification have direct access to employment on the sponsor’s terms.

Sources: Migration Department. Checked 17 October 2026.

Path to permanent residence

  • A spouse or civil partner of a Cypriot citizen can apply for Cypriot citizenship (form M125) after three years of marriage or partnership, either living in Cyprus (at least six months a year and at least two of the last three years together there) or living abroad. The fee is €300.
  • For adults on an immigration permit, the right of residence has unlimited validity; the card is replaced every ten years, and the permit lapses after two years’ absence or permanent residence abroad.

Tax

  • The Tax Department says more than 183 days in Cyprus in a tax year makes you tax resident. Its 60-day alternative needs at least 60 days in Cyprus, no more than 183 days in any other country, a business or job in Cyprus and a permanent home you own or rent.
  • The Tax Department says people who are not domiciled in Cyprus, or who are not tax resident, are not subject to the special defence contribution on rental, interest and dividend income. You are deemed domiciled after 17 of the previous 20 years as a Cyprus tax resident.

Your passport

What differs for each passport, from the same sources. A line that says there is no difference means the sources we read name none.

United States passport

  • US citizens can visit Cyprus without a visa for up to 90 days, but the family pages say entry for family members is by consular visa or an entry permit the Cypriot citizen or sponsor applies for; they do not say whether a visa-free visitor can apply after arrival. The FBI’s Identity History Summary costs US$18 and the apostille is a separate State Department step.
  • The US has no social security agreement with Cyprus, and US citizens abroad report worldwide income to the IRS, and a 1984 income tax treaty with Cyprus is in force. Foreign accounts totalling more than US$10,000 at any time in the year are reportable on an FBAR.

Canada passport

  • Canadians can visit Cyprus without a visa for up to 90 days, and Canada’s advice says anyone planning to live in Cyprus needs the correct visa or residency permit. A Canadian marriage certificate needs an apostille from Global Affairs Canada or the issuing province, which Canada has issued since 11 January 2024; the RCMP’s certified criminal record check has a federal fee of 25 Canadian dollars.
  • Canada and Cyprus have a 1984 tax convention and a social security agreement covering the CPP and OAS.

Australia passport

  • Australians can visit Cyprus without a visa for up to 90 days in a 6-month period, and Smartraveller says anyone staying longer must apply for a visa. The Australian Federal Police check costs 57 Australian dollars (114 with fingerprints) and DFAT’s apostille costs 105 Australian dollars.
  • Australia and Cyprus have no income tax treaty. Their social security agreement covers pensions only.

New Zealand passport

  • New Zealand passports are on Cyprus’s list of nationals who need no visa for up to 90 days. A Ministry of Justice criminal record is free (about 20 working days), and the Department of Internal Affairs apostille costs NZ$37 for 15 working days or NZ$120 for 5.
  • New Zealand has no tax treaty or social security agreement with Cyprus.
