Visa

Family visa in Italy

Italy’s family route lets the spouse, registered partner, children or dependent parents of an Italian or EU citizen settle in Italy on a free national family-reasons visa. Relatives of non-EU residents come in by family reunification, after a clearance (nulla osta) and income and housing tests.

Official names
Visto nazionale per motivi familiari (national visa for family reasons), family members of Italian or EU citizens, Legislative Decree 30/2007; Visto per ricongiungimento familiare (family reunification visa), family members of non-EU residents, Legislative Decree 286/1998 art. 29

Who it’s for

  • For family of an Italian or EU citizen who lives in Italy or is moving there, the eligible relatives are the spouse, a registered partner, direct descendants under 21 or dependent (including the spouse’s), and dependent parents and grandparents (including the spouse’s).
  • Since 1 June 2024 these relatives need a national visa for family reasons to settle in Italy, rather than a short-stay visa. For visits under 90 days, relatives accompanying or joining the citizen are given a tourist visa of up to 90 days.
  • For family of a non-EU resident, the eligible relatives are a spouse aged 18 or over and not legally separated, a civil partner, minor children, adult children with a total disability, and dependent parents or parents over 65 in listed cases. The resident must hold a permit of at least one year.

Money tests

  • For family of an Italian or EU citizen the pages we read set no income test. Where dependency must be shown, you give proof of regular money sent by the citizen to you over the last year; Toronto says the support must be structural, with no minimum duration.
  • For family of a non-EU resident, the resident must show income of at least the annual social allowance, plus half that amount for each relative joining, and twice the allowance for two or more children under 14. The amount is updated each year, and the page we read prints only a 2022 figure, so it is unknown here.
  • The resident also needs housing that meets hygiene and size standards, confirmed by a housing suitability certificate from the town hall. For one child under 14 the housing owner’s consent is enough.

Documents

  • For family of an Italian or EU citizen: a letter of invitation from the citizen saying they want to exercise the right to family unity, with a copy of their ID, plus civil-status documents showing the relationship, translated and apostilled, or a marriage record registered in Italy.
  • New York adds that foreigners applying through marriage to an Italian citizen must register the marriage at the Italian consulate before applying, and that for minor children the other parent must give written permission.
  • For family of a non-EU resident you need the family reunification clearance (nulla osta) from the Sportello Unico, used within six months, civil-status documents legalised or apostilled, and proof of money sent in dependency cases. Sydney also says it will not accept a marriage older than 6 months, as printed on its checklist.

Timing

  • Apply at the Italian consulate covering where you live. Toronto takes national visa applications by mail and calls you in for fingerprints, and says some national visas take 45 to 90 business days; Sydney takes applications in person and says processing takes from a few hours to 15 days.
  • After you arrive, apply for the residence card or permit within 8 working days if you hold a long-term family visa; without one, the Questura of Arezzo says to apply after three months in Italy.

Fees

  • The family-reasons visa for relatives of Italian or EU citizens is issued free of charge. Wellington lists the exempt relatives as spouses, civil partners, children under 21, certain adult children and dependent parents.
  • The residence card for relatives of EU citizens costs €30.46 to produce, and the annual or biennial permit for cohabiting relatives of Italian citizens €70.46; a revenue stamp of €16 is also required. The national visa fee for family of non-EU residents is €116.

How long it lasts and renewal

  • Relatives of EU citizens who use free movement get a residence card valid 5 years; at renewal it is valid 10 years for adults with permanent residence rights. For relatives of Italian citizens who have not used free movement, a five-year electronic residence permit for family reasons is renewable and can be converted into a work permit.
  • Permits issued after family reunification with a non-EU resident last up to 2 years, and a renewal can last up to three years.

Path to permanent residence

  • A foreign relative of an EU citizen gains the right of permanent residence after five years of legal, continuous stay in Italy with the citizen, and can ask for a permanent residence card. The right is lost after an absence of more than two consecutive years.
  • Citizenship by marriage is tied to this route: for a spouse living abroad the application can be made three years after the marriage (one and a half with minor children), with Italian at B1 level, a €250 payment and a wait of 24 to 36 months for the Interior Ministry.

Tax

  • Since 2024 you are Italian tax resident if for most of the year (183 days, 184 in a leap year) you are on the population register, have your residence or domicile in Italy, or are physically present. Residents are taxed on worldwide income.
  • For 2026 the IRPEF scale is 23% up to €28,000, 33% from €28,000 to €50,000 and 43% above, with regional and municipal surcharges on top.
  • The new-resident option can be extended to family members who also move their tax residence to Italy, at €50,000 a year each for moves from 1 January 2026 (€25,000 in the older text of the page), while the main taxpayer pays a flat €300,000.

Your passport

If you hold a US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand passport

What differs for each passport, from the same sources. A line that says there is no difference means the sources we read name none.

United States passport

  • New York asks for a copy of the EU citizen’s ID or passport with a declaration that the citizen meets the legal requirements. The US taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live, and foreign accounts above $10,000 in total at any time in the year are reportable on an FBAR.
  • The 1984 US-Italy income tax convention lets each country tax its own citizens as if the treaty did not exist, with listed exceptions.

Canada passport

  • Toronto asks non-Canadian applicants for a Canadian residence permit or visa, and Canadian civil records for a marriage held in Canada go through its Civil Registry section. Ottawa asks non-Canadian citizenship applicants for a permanent resident card.

Sources: Consulate General of Italy in Toronto (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Embassy of Italy in Ottawa (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Checked 16 October 2026.

Australia passport

  • Sydney asks for an Australian driver’s licence or other proof of address in New South Wales, and certificates issued outside Australia must be legalised and translated into Italian; those applying through marriage must register it at the Sydney consulate first.

Sources: Consulate General of Italy in Sydney (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Checked 16 October 2026.

New Zealand passport

  • Wellington charges national visas in New Zealand dollars at the quarterly rate, and exempts relatives of Italian, EU, EEA or Swiss citizens from the consular fee if they are spouses aged 18 or over and not legally separated, civil partners, or children under 21.
