City in Thailand
Koh Samui
Koh Samui is an island in Surat Thani province with about 71,000 registered residents. It has its own immigration office and a British-curriculum international school founded in 2007, and a 2026 guide describes a large expat community. Two months a year have a daily high of 30 °C or less with little rain. [N1] [V1] [Koh Samui S1] [E1] [W1]
Why it is here
Why Koh Samui is on the list.
A city is listed when there is evidence that people move there. This is the evidence.
- Koh Samui has its own Immigration Bureau office (Samui Immigration Office, Maenam), separate from the Surat Thani office on the mainland. [V1]
- The International School of Samui in Bophut was founded in 2007 and describes itself as a traditional British school. [Koh Samui S1]
- A 2026 guide calls the expat community large for an island, made up of digital nomads, retirees, people who married locally and hospitality workers, and gives a figure of more than 12,000 foreign residents without naming a source; that figure is the guide's own and is not checked. [E1]

Mixed: The Destination Thailand Visa asks for no Thai job offer and has no age minimum, and its funds test is about THB 500,000 in the bank (about US$14,900 at the 9 October 2026 Bank of Thailand rate), well under the US$100,000 line. To be safe, have more than THB 510,000. It is valid for 5 years with multiple entries, but each stay is 180 days, extendable once by 180 days (about 360 days), just under the year the strong grade needs. The year-long Non-Immigrant O-A visa is for people aged 50 and over, and the Long-Term Resident visa asks for about US$80,000 a year in income. To be safe, have more than US$81,000 a year. Washington publishes the checklist for US applicants, with no nationality restriction.

Questions about Koh Samui.
How much does it cost to live on Koh Samui?
A 2026 guide (private, not official) puts a comfortable expat life at THB 40,000 to 55,000 a month, with a one-bedroom condo at THB 10,000 to 25,000, and says island prices run above the mainland. That is one guide's estimate; Fernshore has no dated Samui adverts, so rents are unconfirmed.
Do I need a visa to live on Koh Samui?
Visa rules are national. Visa-free entry is 30 days since 15 September 2026. For longer, the Destination Thailand Visa gives 180 days plus one 180-day extension. Koh Samui has its own Samui Immigration Office in Maenam, separate from the Surat Thani office on the mainland.
What is the weather like on Koh Samui?
Average daily highs run from 29.0 °C in January to 32.9 °C in May. Only January and February are 30 °C or less with under 150 mm of rain; October to December each bring 263 to 445 mm (Thai Meteorological Department normals, 1991–2020).
Is Koh Samui safe?
Fernshore has no Samui-specific safety measure. The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Thailand 101st of 163, a national score. Canada's travel advice says riptides can be strong in coastal areas, including Koh Samui, and that there have been several drownings.
How big is Koh Samui, and is there an international school?
Koh Samui City Municipality, the island district, had 70,999 registered residents in December 2025. A 2026 guide calls its expat community large; its figure of over 12,000 foreign residents has no source. The International School of Samui in Bophut opened in 2007 and calls itself a traditional British school.
