Visa, United States passport
50 of 100Mixed
Mixed: The Destination Thailand Visa asks for no Thai job offer and has no age minimum, and its funds test is about THB 500,000 in the bank (about US$14,900 at the 9 October 2026 Bank of Thailand rate), well under the US$100,000 line. To be safe, have more than THB 510,000. It is valid for 5 years with multiple entries, but each stay is 180 days, extendable once by 180 days (about 360 days), just under the year the strong grade needs. The year-long Non-Immigrant O-A visa is for people aged 50 and over, and the Long-Term Resident visa asks for about US$80,000 a year in income. To be safe, have more than US$81,000 a year. Washington publishes the checklist for US applicants, with no nationality restriction.

Questions from families about Thailand.
What do we know about schools in Thailand?
Not much yet: our research doesn't cover schools, so they show as unknown, not zero. A 2026 guide says Bangkok has Thailand's most comprehensive international school landscape. Hua Hin International School, opened in 2015, teaches the English National Curriculum, Cambridge IGCSE and the IB Diploma.
Can a spouse and children come on the same Thai visa?
The Washington embassy lists spouses and children under 20 of Destination Thailand Visa holders. It asks for the same three-month statements (to be safe, more than THB 510,000) and accepts a family statement with proof of relationship. Ask whether one balance covers everyone.
What do travel advisories say about safety for families in Thailand?
Canada and Australia advise a high degree of caution and New Zealand advises increased caution; Canada also warns of hazardous air in the dry season. The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Thailand 101st of 163. These are country-level views, not a measure of one neighbourhood.
How would healthcare work for a family living in Thailand?
The WHO service coverage index for Thailand is 82 of 100 (2023). Canada's travel advice says care is excellent in major cities, especially private hospitals, but varies in rural areas, and facilities may ask for insurance proof or a deposit. The DTV lists no insurance requirement. Family cover prices are unknown.
How easy is daily life with children if we don't speak Thai?
English proficiency is very low: EF 2025 scores Thailand 402, 116th of 123. Expat Insider 2026 ranks it 3rd of 31 for ease of settling in, a survey of expats. A 2026 guide calls Bangkok Thailand's biggest expat community and describes Hua Hin's as retirees and families.
