Visa
Retirement visa in Cambodia
Cambodia's retirement route is the ER extension of an ordinary (E) visa, generally for people aged 55 or over who are not employed. You show proof of retirement and sufficient funds; no amount is stated. It is granted for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and no work permit is required.
- Official names
- Retirement extension of stay (ER) on an ordinary visa (E class); Ordinary visa (E class)
Sources: Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia). Checked 16 October 2026.
Who it’s for
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists ER among the E-class extensions of stay, generally for people aged 55 or over who are not employed. A private guide words it as people aged 55 or above who can support themselves financially.
- The ordinary (E) visa is also described as suited to retired foreigners. There is no separate retirement visa issued abroad: the ER extension is granted in Cambodia on an E visa.
- The Ministry's table names dependants only under EB. The pages we read do not say whether a spouse can be included on an ER extension.
- Anyone who wants to work needs EB and a work permit; ER is for people who are not employed. A private guide (October 2026) says ER was introduced but is rarely used, and that agencies recommend EB as simpler.

Money tests
- The Ministry asks for proof of retirement and sufficient funds, for example a pension letter or bank statements. It states no income, pension or deposit amount, so that amount is unknown here.
- A private guide (October 2026) says there is no minimum income, no bank balance threshold and no mandatory insurance in the visa system. It does not say how ER applications are judged, so ask the Immigration Department.
- Canada's government says an onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds are required to enter, without giving an amount.

Documents
- A private guide lists proof of retirement from the home country, such as pensions or social security. The Ministry's table names a pension letter or bank statements.
- The pages we read do not say which invitation or letter a retiree gives for the first E visa. The Berlin embassy asks for a signed form, a scan of the passport photo page, a flight itinerary, proof of accommodation and proof of payment.
- Your passport must be valid at least 6 months beyond entry and any extension. Canada says you can be denied an extension if you are not registered on the Foreigners Presence in Cambodia System.
Sources: Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia), Government of Canada (travel.gc.ca). Checked 16 October 2026.
Timing
- You can apply for the E visa on the e-Visa portal, on arrival, or through an embassy by email. The Ministry gives 3 working days to process it, and the visa must be used within 3 months of issue. Since 3 October 2026 every visa is electronic.
- ER is requested in Cambodia after entry. The 2023 investment handbook says the ordinary visa is renewed at the Immigration Department, and Smartraveller says renewals can also be done at some travel agencies and visa agents or at the department's office in Phnom Penh.
Sources: Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia), Council for the Development of Cambodia (government investment body), Smartraveller (Australian Government, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade). Checked 16 October 2026.
Fees
- An adviser reports the ordinary e-Visa fee as US$35 from 1 January 2025, down from US$42. The Berlin embassy charges EUR 40 for an emailed application: EUR 35 plus a EUR 5 uploading fee.
- A private guide (October 2026) reports US$45 for 1 month, US$75 for 3, US$155 for 6 and US$285 for 12 months (EB), or US$300 to US$350 through an agent; an ER-specific fee is not given.
- Overstay is fined at US$10 a day, per the 2023 investment handbook. Canada says the fine has no limit and that after more than 30 days over you must leave Cambodia.
Sources: Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia), General Department of Immigration, Council for the Development of Cambodia (government investment body), Government of Canada (travel.gc.ca). Checked 16 October 2026.
How long it lasts and renewal
- ER is granted for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. The 1- and 3-month extensions are single-entry and the 6- and 12-month ones multiple-entry.
- The E visa itself gives 30 days from entry. The Ministry's page does not say how ER is renewed or whether proof of retirement is checked again.
Sources: Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia). Checked 16 October 2026.
Path to permanent residence
- The pages we read describe no permanent-residence status for ER holders. The Ministry lists ER only as a series of extensions of 1 to 12 months.
- Cambodia's Law on Nationality lets a foreigner apply to naturalise after living in Cambodia continuously for seven years from receiving a residence card issued under the Law on Immigration. Naturalisation is a favour that can be refused. No page we read ties a residence card to ER.
Sources: Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia), Council for the Development of Cambodia (government investment body). Checked 17 October 2026.
Tax
- A person is a Cambodian tax resident if domiciled in Cambodia, if their principal place of abode is there, or if present more than 182 days in the calendar year. PwC words the day count as a 12-month period, so check which applies to you.
- A resident is liable to salary tax and to tax on profit from Cambodian and foreign sources, and a non-resident on Cambodian sources only. How pensions and investment income are treated was not covered in what we read, so that is unknown here.
- The treaty lists of the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not include Cambodia, so no treaty settles a dual claim on your income. Cambodia charges VAT at 10% on most goods and services.

Your passport
If you hold a US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand passport
What differs for each passport, from the same sources. A line that says there is no difference means the sources we read name none.
United States passport
- A US passport is not on the Ministry's visa exemption list, so you need a visa, and the Royal Embassy in Washington covers the United States. The US taxes citizens on worldwide income; Cambodia is not on its treaty list or the Social Security Administration's agreements list, and foreign accounts above US$10,000 in total need an FBAR.
Sources: Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia), Internal Revenue Service, US Social Security Administration, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). Checked 16 October 2026.
Canada passport
- A Canadian passport needs a visa. There is no Cambodian embassy in Ottawa: the Ministry lists the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York as covering Canada. Cambodia is not on the Canada social security agreements list, and a Canadian resident can claim a federal credit for foreign tax paid.
Sources: Government of Canada (travel.gc.ca), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia (mfaic.gov.kh), Canada Revenue Agency. Checked 16 October 2026.
Australia passport
- An Australian passport needs a visa, and the Royal Embassy in Canberra covers Australia and New Zealand. Smartraveller says there is no healthcare agreement between Australia and Cambodia, and Cambodia is not on the Department of Social Services list of social security agreements.
Sources: Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia), Smartraveller (Australian Government, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade), Department of Social Services. Checked 16 October 2026.
New Zealand passport
- A New Zealand passport needs a visa. SafeTravel asks for comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation, and Cambodia is not on Work and Income's social security agreements list.

Questions about Retirement visa in Cambodia.
What is Cambodia's ER retirement extension and who can get it?
ER is an E-class extension of stay, generally for people aged 55 or over who are not employed. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs table asks for proof of retirement and sufficient funds, such as a pension letter or bank statements, and lists no work permit for it.
Does Cambodia's ER retirement extension set an income or savings amount?
No amount is published on the pages we read. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs table asks for proof of retirement and sufficient funds, for example a pension letter or bank statements. A private guide says no minimum income or bank balance applies.
How long does a Cambodian ER retirement extension last?
It is granted for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs table. The 1- and 3-month extensions are single-entry; the 6- and 12-month ones are multiple-entry.
Where do I request a Cambodian retirement extension (ER)?
In Cambodia, after entering on an ordinary (E) visa. The 2023 investment handbook says the ordinary visa is renewed after entry at the Immigration Department, and Smartraveller says some travel agencies and visa agents also handle renewals.
Can I work in Cambodia while on the ER retirement extension?
ER is for people who are not employed, and the Ministry's table lists no work permit for it. Working needs the EB extension plus a work permit from the Ministry of Labour, which EB alone does not replace.
Does the ER retirement extension in Cambodia lead to permanent residence?
The pages we read describe no permanent-residence status for ER holders. The Ministry lists ER as 1- to 12-month extensions. The 1994 Law on Immigration provides for two-year resident cards, but no source ties them to ER.
