Visa
Family visa in Indonesia
Indonesia's family visas (E31) let a spouse, child or parent join an Indonesian citizen or a permit holder; the E31A is for the spouse of a citizen. The pages read set no income test. The E31A gives 1 or 2 years, and a spouse married to a citizen for at least 2 years can ask for a permanent permit.
- Official names
- E31A Spouse of Indonesian National Family Visa; E31B Spouse of Resident Permit Holder (ITAS/ITAP) Family Visa; E31 Family Visa

Who it’s for
- The visa list has a family group (E31): the E31A spouse of an Indonesian national, the E31B spouse of a resident permit holder (ITAS or ITAP), children of an Indonesian national or of a permit holder, and parents of an Indonesian national or of a permit holder.
- Immigration's stay permit FAQ allows a visit stay permit to be changed to a limited stay permit for a foreigner joining a spouse who is an Indonesian citizen, and for children joining a parent with a limited or permanent permit if they are under 18 and unmarried.
- The E31A and E31B pages give only the title and fees. Rights to work, conditions and restrictions are not stated on them, so whether a family permit lets you take a job is unknown from these pages.

Money tests
- The E31A and E31B pages state no income, savings or deposit test.
- The documents the FAQ lists for a foreign spouse do not include a bank statement, and proof of living costs is not required for extensions of a limited stay permit.

Documents
- For a foreign spouse of an Indonesian citizen changing a visit permit to a limited stay permit, the FAQ lists a passport copy, an application letter from the Indonesian spouse, proof of domicile, the marriage certificate or marriage book, and the Indonesian spouse's ID card and family card.
- For a marriage held abroad the FAQ adds a copy of the civil registry report, and a valid entry stamp is needed for the permit. Indonesia has accepted apostilles since the Apostille Convention entered into force for it on 4 June 2022.
- A foreign spouse does not need the guarantee letter that most limited stay permit applications require. Extensions need a passport, a signed integration statement, the current permit and the Indonesian spouse's documents.

Timing
- The FAQ describes the change from a visit stay permit to a limited stay permit as requested while you are already in Indonesia, generally within 30 days of the entry stamp, and a late filing incurs a fee. The E31A page gives no processing time.
- Extensions of a limited stay permit are decided in up to 3 working days after the fee is received, or 5 working days where the Director General must approve. An application filed and paid before expiry is not counted as an overstay.

Fees
- The E31A for 1 year costs IDR 6,000,000: limited stay permit IDR 3,000,000, visa IDR 500,000, verification IDR 1,000,000 and re-entry permit IDR 1,500,000. For 2 years it costs IDR 8,500,000. The page misprints the 2-year visa cost (its first digit is missing), so that one item is unknown.
- The E31B has the same fees: IDR 6,000,000 for 1 year and IDR 8,500,000 for 2 years.
- Extending a permanent stay permit costs IDR 5,000,000 for 5 years, IDR 10,000,000 for 10 years and IDR 15,000,000 for unlimited validity.

How long it lasts and renewal
- The E31A fee options are 1 year and 2 years. The FAQ allows limited stay permit extensions of up to 1 year at a time, up to 5 times in a row.
- Applications for permits of one year or less can be filed from 30 days before expiry, and for longer permits from 3 months before expiry. The permit can be extended for family reunification as one of the listed categories.

Path to permanent residence
- Immigration says a limited stay permit holder can convert to a permanent stay permit after being in Indonesia for more than 3 consecutive years, or after being married to an Indonesian citizen for at least 2 years.
- A new permanent stay permit is valid for 5 years, and spouses and children of a permit holder follow the holder's validity. The file includes a passport, the current permit, proof of domicile, a signed integration statement, a sponsor letter and the sponsor's ID card, with the marriage certificate translated by a sworn translator unless it is in English.

Tax
- Under PER-23/PJ/2025, documents showing family members moving to Indonesia are listed with a limited stay permit and a home lease of more than 183 days as evidence of intent to live there. You are a resident after more than 183 days within 12 months.
- A resident reports income from Indonesia and abroad and can credit foreign tax. The non-taxable allowance is IDR 54 million for the taxpayer, IDR 4.5 million more if married and IDR 4.5 million for each dependent, up to 3.
- A foreign individual registers for a tax number (NPWP) with a passport copy and a copy of the stay permit, and the annual return is due by 31 March.
